Hey all,
I am looking at buying a new compressor for the shop. For the most part I am the only guy in the shop, but I am running a 15 cfm@150psi tire machine and my 1/2, and 3/4 impacts, die grinders, air drills air ratchets, and such. Like I said, I am normally the only guy in the shop and I am looking for the best value in an air compressor. I assume I want a two stage because they recover faster and last longer....right? I don"t need the compressor running all the time and from what I have researched a two stage is what I want. I"m not sure. I have checked out the Quincy"s at the local Farm and Home store. The four cylinder single stage was $833 and the two cylinder two stage was around $1300. Menards has a Sanborn 80 gal two stage for around $800, but I"m not sure it"s the best bet. I have searched the archives looking for ideas, but I would like to find the best deal for the money, and I would like to find a price around $800, but I will try and do what I need to do.

Thank you all for your opinions.

Travis

The best is DeVilbiss. I paid $2,300 for mine in 1997.

I have a Quincy 7.5 Hp 80 gallon setup that I bought through Dallas Compressor. Its a real good compressor--the best that I could find, and its worked very hard for me. I looked at a few IR 7.5's before getting the Quincy; there was a noticable difference in the quality of the parts.

Okay guys, this is what I needed to know. If I can't get what I need for around the $800 mark then I will save some more pennies and get what's good. I checked out the Quincys at the local Farm and Home and realized they are the Quicy Air Master models--I assume they are a cheaper version after checking out the website, but I guess they are still okay. I got to talking to the local parts store and they sell a Pit Boss made by Devair, but I also suppose they are a cheaper model. They are 3 cylinder two stages at 16cfm@150 psi. I am looking real hard at the Quincy's at the local Farm and Home even though they may be the cheaper models. I would like to know if they are worth it. I would like to buy one that I would not have to worry about and that I would not have to wonder if it is going to be enough should I need to expand. I really appreciate all of your opinions. Thanks to all.

Quincy.
Champion.
DeVair.
Curtis.
These spring to mind first, with the Quincy QR25 series at the very top, but you will have to shell out a few bucks. These are all amongst the best machines you can buy. IR makes some decent units, but you have to know what you are looking at there, as they have a few dodgy setups (undersized, overspeed pumps).

At least theses companies will be quoting real HP figures. DeVair has a cheaper line based around the Sanborn cast-iron pump that might fit the bill. Champion has the QT series which is a more economical solution. Champion has a cheaper line which uses Schultz pumps which might also be worth looking into. Curtis Masterline series is an excellent machine, but they have a cheaper line based upon Fu-Sheng pumps. You might get away with a 5hp, but realistically, a 7.5 would be a better bet. For $800 it will next to impossible to get what you need, if you are looking for "the best".

for that price your are dreaming. I run C-Aire units usually get 12-15years on those. But I run two eighty gal tanks together thats what really makes aircompressors nice and way less run time. I run tire machine an d air tools all day long in most cases. some days there is two air tools runnig in tandem.

For $800 your compressor is a pipe dream.

A 5 hp 80 gal two stage will produce about 15-17 CFM, if you are slow with the tire machine, you might get away with it. Reality dictates you need a 7.5 horse (about 24 CFM) or 10 horse (about 30 CFM).

The five horse is going to run you $1300-$1500 bare minimum, the 7.5 horse is going to run $1700-$2000, and you are looking at up to $2500 for a 10 hp, and I'm not talking Emglo here either..... ..

Whats the old saying, good, cheap, fast, you can have any two of them, but not all three (unless you are willing to pay $$$)

Travis,We ran Chapion 10hp 3ph. with a 125gal tank and you can take off two lug nuts with a 3/4 gun and wait for it to build up again. But we could run 3 lifts and 3 Coats tire changers at the same time and not miss a beat. quincy is a good brand (i`ll drive by the plant about 9:00am)
