Hi guys, am thinking of buying a bandsaw. I want one with 12 inch resaw capacity and for not more than 1500.00. What would be your advice and also your experiance with different brands?
Thanks in advance.

I have a big, ol' Craftsman band saw sitting on a table downstairs, in the cellar. I found it laying out with the garbage one day! I had a friend make the upper wheel bearing holder, so it is usable again. I thought i'd be doing wood working, but got into mower repairs instead. anybody near Pittsburgh, pa wants it, i'll let it go fo $50! Email me! Rustyj

Hey RJ,
The company I work for sells an 18", a 20", & a 24" bandsaw... I'm reasonably certain that our 18" saw has about the same capacities as the Jet 18"... it's only good for 10" under the blade guide... I own an Italian 18" saw and it's the same. Our 20" saw has 12 7/16" capacity (resaw)& a 2 hp motor... sells for $1599 plus $159 for freight (sku #959571) Our 24" saw has 15 1/2" resaw capacity, a 5 hp motor and a magnetic switch. It sells for $1899 plus $134 for shipping (sku # 959578). All 3 saws have cast iron tables & trunnions, a rigid steel frame, european style blade guides, cast iron fence with steel guide rails, foot operated blade brake and a 4" dust port. All three models were recently reconfigured to include cast iron upper and lower wheels... this results in one of the smoothest running machines I've seen (including my high dollar Italian job!) The fit and finish is excellent. I've used all three and can tell you that you won't find a better machine for your money. Our technical department stocks a complete line of replacement parts for every machine we sell... and some of the machines the other guys sell. My friend heads up that department and regularly tells me about the number of customers that buy from various other companies (I won't mention any names, but you KNOW who they are) who've tried to get support where they bought their machine and end up turning to us to get that support. You can check these saws out at www.woodworker.com or talk to a real person at 1.800.645.9292 sorry this is so long, but hope it helps.
Best Regards, DL

Your going to need at least an 18" band saw if you want to do 12 in. re-sawing. I would suggest the Jet JWBS 18X stock # 710750. Jet makes some good products and this unit has a list price of $1699, so maybe you can get it at a discount price. Also make sure that you can get service from who you buy it from, even better see if they are an authorized service center for Jet. Good luck see link below.

Pay attention to the stiffness of the body casting and how ajustable the saw is.

I lent my old 14" Delta to a friend a few years ago to do the stem and timbers in a large boat. When I eventually got it back from him he bought a 14" King only to find that he couldn't maintain enough blade tension to do the cutting in the 4" oak which he could do easily with my machine. He ended up building a 1/4" plate stiffener to put alongside the casting for strength.

I agree that most of the 14" bandsaws are built in the same factory, but the companies with large shares get the best of the castings.

I have another King 14" in my garage which runs very smoothly but is useless because of the flex in the body. As well, everything that should be a thumbscrew for adjustment is a nut, and everything that should be a nut is a thumbscrew. In frustration I overtightened a nut and destroyed a white metal casting holding the blade blocks, so now the machine is 185 pounds of scrap.

I'd look for a pre-80's Delta, or a Laguna 20" if you could find and afford a used one.

Bandsaws is one thing the chi-com countries can build well enough if you stay away from the lowest priced ones from Harbor frieght or Enco. My 7x11 is an Acer but Jet, Grizzly, Acura are all decent plus others. Purchasing the correct blades for your work and treating them right is more important than the brand of saw. I get good service from Morse, Lennox and Starrett Bi-metal bands. There is no such thing as the universal great band for all work. Most dont like to screw with changing them for differing work and get tired of maintaining the coolant tank and thus band life will be short no matter how much they spend. Read up and head proper band use and care, it pays.
