Here in mid Michigan and neighboring areas we are getting infected with the Ash borer. Kills ash trees like Dutch elm disease did to elm years ago. Currently there is a ban on taking Ash wood from infected counties into clean ones. A neighbor just said someone in the area got fined $800.00 for moving firewood. And it didn't matter what kind, they said there could be a piece of Ash in the bottom. In MI can I move wood other than Ash? I got a chance for some nice Oak but I don't want to get busted. This whole idea of trying to stop it is ridiculous anyway, without %100 stop checkpoints on every road everywhere.

Looking at the map it looks like the borer is all over the state already. Too bad. Looks like it will probably get most of the mature ash. I saw on the news where one nursery in Saginaw destroyed 700 trees because nobody would want them now.

After reviewing the MDA site it says:"Movement of hardwood firewood from the infected areas is prohibited". It doesn't specify ASh. So I guess that means no movement of wood, period! so i guess I could get fined even for oak and even if all counties invlved are infected.

I'm going to email the MDA and ask about firewood movement. I'd like to know for myself. Is your oak within the same county as where you would use it? Where are you located? I'll post any response I get.

here in central ohio there is a couple of quarantined areas, in franklin, & delaware counties. i live just north in morrow. i keep a check on my woods, and those close. that borer makes a D shaped hole. so far haven"t seen any.
if i was to find infestation. i would call in a logger or portable mill,clean cut the ash, saw the lumber. burn all the slab, if you don"t heat with wood i"m sure a neighbor does. working together we can wipe out this pest.

Hi Don, I am just East of you in Knox. Have not seen any either here on my place just SW of Mt Vernon but I have few Ash. I wonder about those big clearing outfits? They drag that equipment all over chipping and what not, I see them around a lot. Do they have to clean the equipment before moving?

dont know if they clean or not. i see 1 outfit from up our way haul logs from columbus area most everyday. you would think they wouldnt be allowed to haul logs from or through an infected area. have a good un gona watch my penn state now

If your oak is in the same county as you, you should be ok. Check out the site and map it my other posts. The main thing seems to be not to move wood from infected areas to noninfected areas.

That's just it, how do they know where you're going and where from. I want to go from Oakland Co. to Saginaw, all infected Counties with only oak, but if they're going to say I might have ash then I'm still in trouble. Shouldn't be a problem but who knows. The sad part is they started trying to stop this two summers ago in the state campgrounds which is how most got spread. They had an extensive poster and info campaign identifying the ash borer, what the bug looks like at all stages and its holes. Never once did they put up a poster id'ing White ash wood or trees. Last summer I sat in the campground watching some guy proudly unloading his cord and a half of white ash firewood, (clearly a violation). I'm not sure the college volunteers in the campgrounds knew what ash looked like either. So its basically too late. They tried to stop it at the Mackinaw Bridge last summer but it was voluntary checkpoint so naturally it showed up in the Upper penn.

Where in Michigan are you at? I am 15 miles from of Flint. I cut down one Ash tree back in the spring and it had that Ash borer bug all under the bark. A friend of mine that lives in the Dryden area cut down about a dozen ash trees infected with the ash borer. You are right, how do you know, I see guys with pickups filled with firewood, What if you have to buy wood? where are the infected areas? Where can you go and where can you not go?
