I was wondering what you all thought was the most important tool in your shop that you use to restore tractors.

THanks,

Lathe and welder, hands down. You can drill holes and cut wood other ways, but you cann't make screws or turn bushings, or weld without them.

Most important tools? Hmm.
Over and above the essentials (Brain, safety specs & ear defenders), I would say:-
1. stove or heater
2. Pint Mug
3. TEA
Here in Scotland, we long ago realised it's impossible to work when freezing and a good hot brew thaws in places hard to reach!
Later guys, JV.

The lathe was always called the king of tools. I think the first two really important tools were a lathe and a shaper...then with craftmanship all the rest of the tools were made. Fred OH

I forget to mention the must wear ear muffs and side shields on my glasses. It is such a habit I forget to mention them with me. Air tools are really nice but those can really be a hammering on your ears especially the bigger bolts. I always wear muffs most of the time the foam ear plugs not much for because of the grease that is usually involved when assembly machines. I just didn't like putting them in my ears with grease on my hands.

Air conditioner. It's really hard to work on things when sweat constantly drips down into your eyes and onto what you are working on. I had to turn the house A/C on yesterday to cut the humidity. We don't even get a break in the winter.

the beer fridge and a nice place to sit next to the heater. There's no feeling like sitting back and admiring a job well done.

Although not necessary for rebuilding tractors, the tool I can't be without is a good torch set.weld, cutt, heat, and clean parts with O2.

The best tool you have is your MIND. If you cant figure it out, the most expensive piece of equipment is no good.
The tool is jsut that a tool, you do the work.

Man you beat me to the punch on this one. When I read the question that was the first thing that went through my mine. Without a good head on your shoulders and the good sense to use good sense there isn't a tool made thats worth anything.

Most likely the air compressor. From that single machine, I can remove parts (air drives), remove surface stuff & clean the shop floor (compressed air), clean parts (bead blast), prime and paint (piant gun), and replace parts.
It would be hard to get much done without the air compressor.

Number one would be the tool chest. Ya gotta have a place to store all of those tools so that you can easily find them.
Number two might be an air compressor, or #2 might be the oxy/acetylene torch.
After that it's really hard to put them in the order of importance.
Of course the most important could also be a good heating system for the shop so that you can be out there tinkering in cold weather.
