How much weight is too much to add?

I know it depends a bit on what you are doing. I'm talking about general work on a 40 hp tractor. I'd like enough weight to help, but not so much as to wear the front end out prematurely. I have a Deutz 36 hp(3607) with no weights and the front end is forever in the air. It does have fluid in the tires. I have an IH 2504 (40hp)that has filled rear tires, rear wheel weights (one-piece), and a 400lb bumper (the added weight is welded on) I read here that the IH weighs 4100lb dry. I don't mind the rear weight and value some out front, but that seems a bit much. The problem is it's not easy to take off. I'd like to decide how much to keep before I cut and weld. Thanks

Wade,
You don't say what kind of work you are doing. But 400 even 800 is not to much weight when you want to keep the front end down. Not enough on the back and you just spin out except if you are coming down a hill with a load that pushes you. The higher the rear hitch height the more the front end will raise.
Tractors are a motorized "Teeter Totter".
I would rather have too much frt weight than not enough. They won't be reading the tragic accident in the paper about the tractor that "suddenly upended and trapped the driver".
When you are looking back at your work there is very little time to react or notice the front coming up till it's to late!!
Maybe you could come up with a hang on suitcase bracket. IH has more suitcase weights around than anyone. But make sure you lock them in so they can't come off and hit you if you do still crank a wheelie!!
