The Lowes and the Home Depot nearest me (15 mi) are right across the street from each other.

Yesterday I walked in Lowes to return an unused electrical box and I looked at plastic storage containers. I liked the 96 qt Rubbermaid snaptop in clear, for storing extra sheets and towels in the unused bath and bedroom. It was $13.95. I also looked at SuperStrut 1-5/8" x 1-5/8" 12 gauge, 10 ft. It was $19.98 (I need several pieces in the future for mounting of lighting, etc, in the shop.

Across the street, Home Depot had the exact same storage container, except smoke blue clear (and not on sale) for $8.95! Thats a whopping $5 cheaper than Lowes. Looked at the SuperStrut and found the exact same item was $14.98. Again, a $5 savings! This is an extreme difference for two competing stores.

Just wanted to make a point, do your leg work and homework before you buy, the money you save will be well worth it!

You can check Lowes on line and print out a local page with price for proof of the lower sales price - don't know about HD. I did that a couple of years ago when HD had a 10% off any power tool with any power tool trade in. I got my Dewalt 708 slider for 10% off (old drill motor) plus 10% (Lowes had them for $25 less) plus a $100 Dewalt credit for any power tool at HD. $476 for the slider plus $100 off on a Skill 77M.

I think the lesson here is that either/both will stick it to you if you don't do your homework/legwork and know what prices should be. And don't be afraid to walk away from them when they won't come to your terms.

I found a lower price on the same item at an HD. I told the clerk, he asked a few questions, I deferred him to call Lowe's. He said if Lowe's confirmed it, he had to match it plus 10%. Saved me the running around, I just had to wait for the manage to approve it.
I like working THEIR plan to MY advantage.
So, don't drive around wasting the savings, if you spot something, call the other stores and have them quote you the price for the same item. If it is lower, you know what to do.

I live in Downeast Maine. Nearest city is 25 miles away, with a population of maybe 50,000. Growing like a weed tho.

ANY-way, Home Depot came to town 3-4 years ago. Having seen their business model in action before, I told anyone that would listen that they would lowball prices until they were the only game in town, and then jack them right out of sight. For everything but lumber, that's just what they did. Fortunately, there are a couple of big players in the lumber business around here that they couldn't do that to, but all the Mom and Pop operations are history.

Now I hear Lowes is coming to town, and going to build right in the shadow of HD. We'll see price wars again, and maybe HD will smarten up for a while. I sure hope so.

(Disclaimer: I'm not expressing opinions for or against this sort of business model, neither condemning or praising Home Depot. Just stating the facts as they happened in this instance. Walmart Rants will be ignored.)

You wanna hear them really cry about the 10%--
This has been a few years back when I built the house-father in law doing the work (carpenter along with his sons)
Lowes had OSB on sale at around $2 a sheet cheaper than HD, went in and ask te manager for the 10% and he whined, finally said I have to do it how many sheets do you want. Thats when my father in law asked how many sheets in a bundle, 85, should have seent he manager when FIL said we'll take 6 bundles. Manager said we had to take it all that night or he wouldnt hold it thinking he would get out of it, he didnt know i had the lowboy behind the KW in the parking lot!!!!! !

I agree, and I have found that a lot of that legwork can be done by sitting down in front of the computer. But the real point is that you should never purchase the first item that you look at.

Don't know if Lowe's still does it, but they used to offer to match prices plus 10%, as does Home Depot. Menards offers to match plus 11% off. All three have certain restrictions. You have to cajole them into it and it makes for some running around, but can be worth it. I saved several hundred dollars at a Lowes once on drywall. Lowes had upped the price to match the market and their competitor still had stock at the old price. I refused to back down when they whined about it and saved a bunch.

Actually, I had forgot about the match minus 10% deal. The superstrut was the exact same item, same brand, same mfg part number, I suppose a little back and forth would have saved me another $6 (plus tax saved too!) since I bought four pieces.

Biggest hassle to going back and forth is the traffic light. One cross type intersection with traffic lights is the only light in and out of two huge shopping centers, Home Depot, Ross, Kolls, several restrurants such as Longhorn, Office Max, PetSmart, Walmart, Lowes, Hooters, Applebees, and MANY more, etc., PLUS a huge apartment complex, and two hotels. Probably the most difficult to navigate section of road in all of Georgia.
