I saw a big one for sale at a swap meet in Boonville, MO last year for $800.00. Don't know if it was worth that much though.

they were originally for making rings for wagon wheels and hubs. I would look up a blacksmith/ironworkers web site and post it there.Or if there are any amish close to you sometimes they will want items like that. the ones i use for shoeing are always looking to buy anything to work iron with.

I don't know the current value. But when I was working as a striker in a blacksmith shop, we used it to make wrought-work round. Anything from barrel hoops, tie-up loops, and the hoops kids would play with by rolling on the ground with a tee-stick. To use it, just weld up your rod or bar stock in a rough circle, drop it (hot) over the top of the cone, and tap it into a smooth circle at the proper diameter of the cone.

Redneck:
It was in the 70's. I was working for the National Park Service in the Herbert Hoover National Historic Site. A park ranger and I rebuilt a forge (new frog, two-iron, firebrick, etc). I built a 3x7 foot bellows based on the design of an antique. Took me the entire hide of one cow for seals and valve hinges. To demonstrate the trade, the site hired a blacksmith by the name of Merle Holland, who had done blacksmith and farrier work in that area in the 1930's. He had retired from an intervening career in welding, but still had a lot of work left in him. He enjoyed working at the Site, and talking to the people who came through on tours. We built a buckboard (double-tree hitch)from the ground up. I did the carpentry, Merle did the iron work with me striking with 5 or 7-lb where he led with his "little" 3-lb hammer. Welding and shrinking those tires on my precious wheels made me nervous, but we got them all on, first try. I can't claim to be a blacksmith by a long shot, but I did do a lot of sweating in that shop for a couple of summers, and learned a few things.

Have you ever done any blacksmith work?

Joe

No, I am a toolmaker. I run a Milling machine, Lathe, surface grinder and I cut use hand tools. But I have never used an anvil and forged wrought metal to make stuff like in the olden days. I am only 36. I am sure that if I was living in the 1880's I would be a blacksmith. (who knows)

They are used to make rings, horse shoes, decorative things with a round curve. I seen one this summer at a auction and I think around three hundred plus. Dave NE IA
