Received a model 4018 (40 cc/18" bar) for Christmas. Use will be pretty light. Things like keeping fence lines clear, miscellaneous trimming, etc.

I suspect this is not the most expensive saw around or the highest quality, but for my purposes it is probably OK. If it is a real dog though, I would return it and exchange it for a Stihl or Echo.

Thanks,

Kirk

Charles hate to disagree but I tried synthetic oil in a new string trimmer and it wouldn't idle. Took it back for a new one, same problem. Switch to 2 cycle oil non-synth and it worked great.

Just my 2 cents. On these little saws use straight 30 or 40wt oil in the oiler. The "thick" stuff / bar oil is harder on the little gears or diaphrams. Also when you change your chain, clean the grove that the chain rides in. Make sure you find where the oil hole in the bar is! Learn how to sharpen the chain on the bar. It is very easy and will save you TONS of greef down the line. Just these little things will make you the envey of the neighborhood! Jeffcat

I have owned a green Poulan 16" saw with no problems for 4-5 years. Starts and runs good, but I do not cut wood for a living, just use it to trim and cut the odd tree down. John L.

I and several friends have the regular duty ones that have held up well for light use, so a pro series should be fine. If mine doesn't fire up and idle nicely, I know the air intake filter is pretty dirty, otherwise no repairs needed.

I personally would put the Poulan Pro saws in the same catagory as the odd number Stihl saws, Neighbor has one that he has used hard for over 10 years, the only problem has been a $12.00 oiler. I sell them, have not had one problem with any of them. Now the green Poulan, they do not have iso mounts, so are a little hard on hand. but a friend has one he cuts enough wood each year to heat an old 2 story farm house. So, IMHO, the people who put down the Poulan Pro saws either do not know much about saws, do not take care of the one they have, or have never used one! My $.02 worth.

Unlike a few of the tools I've tried from Harbor Freight, I have had terrific service from 2 Poulan chainsaws. Better than the old Homelite's I grew up with if you keep your chain sharp.(They are so much lighter) Cleaning up deadfalls after a storm around a farm, they do an excellent job.
I don't think you will be disappointed unless you are cutting 8 hours a day, six days a week.

When it come to a chainsaw....Stihl is the only brand for me. Purchased a Stihl 031AV in 1974, used it for about 29 years. In '03 I purchased a Stihl Farm Boss, it appears to be just as tough as that old 31AV. They have excellent parts and service.

I have a 16" Poulan that I have had for four years, done similar chores as you mention. No problems at all. Keep it clean & dry, use a good quality oil, and it should do well

I have a 2800 Forrester with a 20" bar. (2.8 cubic inch, before they went metric) and it works great. Poulan is a good solid product that will perfrom quite well for what you want.

Use a good SYNTHETIC 2 stroke oil, (such as AMSOIL) and you will never have any starting problems, plug fouling or exhaust port clogging.

Do not waste your time with standard non-synthetic oils, the difference is well worth the extra money you will pay.
