Is it possible to be electrocuted by holding on to the piece that is being welded, either stick welding or wire welding? I see guys hold pieces in position by hand all of the time at work, but my dad claims that he was badly electrocuted once years ago while he was helping grandpa do some stick welding on the corn picker. Says he was holding the part, grandpa went to strike the arc but the stick stuck to the part.

Hi IHChevy,

Generally the average person does not get hurt from the shock of welding current. I say that and there always will be someone who can't take a shot of any type electricity.

Typicaly, getting shocked by welding current hurts just like grabbing a spark plug on a running engine. It may well surprise you causing you to get injuried from a secondary source.

As long as the piece your holding is placed firmly to the base metal where the ground is located, then your chance of getting a small shock is very small as the piece is being tack welded.

Once I shut down an electric motor driven welder, and started winding up the cables while it was still coasting. Got a good poke.

If you become a better ground than the project you can get shocked pretty good. With the electrode stuck to the project he was holding he undoubtedly became the shortest distance to the ground.

Can you be electrocuted (a fatal injury involving electrcity), not unless there is a serious malfuntion in the welder resulting in you getting line current. Can a welder shock you, you bet it can. If you get between the ground and the electrode they can, and will shock you. Also, some of the older welders (Forneys were well known for this) can give you a real shock changing the electrodes. Even my Lincoln tombstone has bitten me if I touched the contact on the electrode holder while seated on the ground.
