Kohler K532 engine backfireing

I have a K532 2 cylinder engine that is backfiring thru the left cylinder. The coil has two sparkplug wires coming out of it and sits behind the carb. There is a non-adjustable flat potted device with three wires that is mounted in the sheet metal that covers the flywheel, but it's about two inches away from the flywheel. I can't see how it can get a spark signal at that distance. Is there anyone who tell me how to set the timing, if that's wrong? Or could it be something else. The engine has lots of hours on it and it seems to have little compression.

Likely the engine has breaker points inside a tin box attached to the governor. There is a centrifugal spark advance in the governor assembly, and the engine won't run right if that screws up.

The other "black box" with three terminals is the voltage regulator.

I'd check the compression of both cylinders, and compare them, first off.

I can just about hold the compression in the cylinder with my thumb, especialy the missfireing side.

I'm not a small engine guru or nothing but
it could be that the key that holds the mag or flywheel has shered and the mag has slipped a few degrees out of time. it will still run to some
extint but fires not exactly at the right time
causing it to backfire. Maybe something to check
that would be a quick fix. Had this happen on
a couple of lawn mowers before. Good luck.

If it is backfiring through one side only, you might want to look at the valves. Sometimes an exhaust or intake valve may not be seating properly and allow this to happen.
