Search Light Rechargeable Battery Problem

I have taken the sealed lead/acid battery out of my 1000,000 candle power search light because it won`t hold its charge. I have opened it up and there is no liquid inside, it is dry. Is this supposed to be like this? can i use battery top up water? or is there some kind of gel in there? the battery is a 6V 4.5Ah type with spade connectors that is can be used in any position. The charger that came with it was a 12v 500mA type which i think was way too much for it.
A electronic component catalogue says that it is not to be charged with a car battery charger, why is this? i have a small 1 amp charger - which is less than the max charge rate of 25% of battery capacity (Ah) and would surely be better than 12Volts.

Thanks

Barry

Most batteries require a charging voltage greater than the voltage of the battery itself. A 12volt charger is acceptable for a 6volt battery. The resistor you mentioned is most likely a current limiting device and not a voltage drop resistor.

I fixed my grandsons riding jeep battery that way, i mixed a teaspoon of epson salts in a few ounces of distilled water and started charging
it, i had a DC amp meter in line and noticed it
started taking a charge again, it also got better
the more times i charged it. A old golfcart guy
told me the epsom desulfates the plates. Im not
sure if i really needed it or just water may have
been enough, anyway it worked.

You can take the battery to "Batteries Plus" and find a match. But, the battery will cost you about the same price as a new light. These kinds of lights are always on sale aroung here.

About the same thing happened to me this last weekend. Searchlight wouldnt charge and battery wouldnt slide out, so I opened the light up. The 12v charger passes through a resistor to drop voltage (dont know why they dont just use a charger for 6v?). Anyway, my batterys plastic case was swelled up, so I knew that was the end of it. Since theres no way Ill find one of those batteries here in Mexico, its off to Sams club to buy a new light.

That seems goofy that they'd supply a 12V charger for a 6v battery. even with 12V ones, some caution you not to leave it on charge for more than x amount of hours, and they aren't kidding. we have one at work that the apprentices have cooked four batteries in, in the last 2 months from leaving it on charge for days at a time.

Probably economics. Millions of 12 volt chargers a made, few for 6 volts.

Battery, if it's what I think it is, is a gel filled. When they get so they won't hold a charge, the need to be replaced. Check with Radio Shack or other battery vendors. Charger could easily be 12v, if the search light has it's own built in charge regulator circuit. Need more information.
