My mother bought a gas stove today to put in her living room where the Ben Franklin was growing up. However, upon inspection at home it turned out it was an LP model. It was clearanced so she can't return it. The actual work of converting it isn't a problem, but the company won't sell me the parts. Does anyone know of any company that will sell the conversion parts to someone other than a certified specialist?

The stove is a Hamilton Vent Free by Vermont Castings. Model no FSHUV34

You could surf over to the most helpful (heating wise) site on the internet, heating help.com. Dan Holohan runs it and has many books for sale about the subject, and the site has a "wall" (like our discussion forums) that you can post questions on. Good luck John L....

I think I converted one of those a few years ago and the kit was around $15. Since then, maybe that's changed. Needed three small parts - LP to NG required a few orifice changes and a little conversion plug. I don't know what Vermont Castingts actually makes, but your stove - I believe was made by CFM Harris Company out of Canada and is sold by other stores other than Vermont Castings. Most of the gas stuff I see nowadays - at least in my area comes setup for NG by default. If changed over to LP, is is relabled and the old parts are put in a bag and taped inside the unit for possible future use. Whatever way your's came originally will show with the letter at the end of the model number. I just tried to buy a new LP clothes dryer from Sears and could not buy one that way. Had to buy a NG dryer and the $14 LP changeover kit along with it and pull it all apart to change it. With a dryer the machine has to be torn to pieces to get at the necessary parts. With a stove, it's much easier. If your model ID is FSHUV34N than it came originally as NG was was converted and maybe the parts are taped inside somewhere. If it's a FSHUV34P - then it originally came setup of LP. You might try calling customer service at the main company - i.e. CFM Harris at 800-524-1898 or 800-944-8982

A vent free will have an oxygen sensor that will have to be replaced as well as the valve that has an internal regulator along with orifice. If you can find a kit it will probably cost more than getting the proper one first. It will be close to $200.00 if they make it. A lot of manufactures do not sell such a kit. If you try to change parts without using manufactures kit it opens up liability for the person that did it if someone gets hurt.

Hi Ryan,

That doesn't suprise me as you have to change a orifice or two and make adjusts on the gas valve, then test the new orperating primeters.

I would think that the gas company would only charge a small set-up fee for this. Then you know it'll be done correct and tested. I'd give them a call.
