home depot water hydrants broke

anybody out there have those glued together water hydrants from home depot? I have had 3 in the last year go bad. I talked to the manager to see if there was a recall and there wasn't. But theres some reason they changed their design to threads instead of glue.All of these hydrants were bought about 3 years ago. and had glue to hold the head and foot valve to the pipe. and all have had the glue let loose creating a geyser in the front yard and barn lot. I thought it was a bad idea when I saw them,but I installed them anyway.My bad, I guess. I was just curious if anybody else had this happen.

About 4 yrs. ago I installed 4 hydrants in my yard, all made in the USA by Simmons:>Link

Left>Link the hoses attached this year, but drained the hoses. Not supposed to leave the hose attached, but I figured with the hose drained it shouldn't hurt anything. Wrong. Casting at the top broke just above where it screws into the pipe. Day temps 25 degrees. However, judging by the rust where it broke, it had been cracked for awhile. As someone else said, it sure is pretty with all that ice, until you start digging in freezing temps, of course.

Anyone know why leaving the hose attached should cause the casting to break?

Richard, when you leave the hose connected, it stands to reason that the "drain back" feature will not work properly, thus leaving water in the head, to freeze and crack.

Wondered that myself, never seen brass and galvanized or stainless put together with glue. Then again if I had enough money to buy the cheap stuff, I waited a little longer to buy the right stuff.

Nope, never happened to me. Probably because I never bought any of them. Something about an item made of plastic that has moving parts doesn"t seem like a good idea.
I am curious though, did you use primer and glue, or just glue?
Also, I had heard at one time that you shouldn"t mix sch. 40 and sch. 80 together, not sure why. The valves should be sch. 80 but I doubt your pipe is.

Nope, can't say that I ever have. Just out of curiosity, whom is the manufacturer and what country was it manufactured in? Just a theory that I have. Thanks.

No name ,just one casting number on the head piece. Sure makes a neat ice sculpture when they blow apart at 2 degrees. We had other water problems in the past ,so I put a low pressure shut off switch on the well pump a long time ago.

My money would be betting that they are some Chinese POS.
The only good hydrant is "IOWA" manufactured by Columbian.
99.9 per cent of commercial cattle feeders can't be wrong.
