I bought me a Bridgeport!!!!!

I looked at a Series 1 Bridgeport 1984 2HP runs well, it is about 10 miles from where I work. I got it for $3000, the read out is messed up though. I am having a company quote me on moving it up to my new place. (I dont want the liability of moving it). I should be buying it next week.

Congratulations on the BP!!! I think you made a wise choice,buying the Real Thing... Sometimes, readouts can be fixed, but if it is on older one, might be best to replace it. New ones are not as expensive as they once were... Any Idea what is wrong with the DRO ???

Yeah, A Bridgeport is the way to go. I still would buy a Atlas, but a Ramco or Aliant is too much of an offshoot. For the money, I would not mind getting 2 of them, with autofeed on the X axis on one so that as one is cutting then I can set up the other one. I used to to that at my old employer, have the lathe cutting and then be setting up the mill.

2 mills would be a good way to almost double your output, later. I have had days that I was able to have the CNC mill, the EDM, & a lathe or surface grinder all running at the same time... A week like that can make a nice chunk of change!!!

I used one for a few years, back when I was a kid and have wanted my own ever since, good pair of hands can do darn near anything with one except bake a cake

saw the Bridgeport display at Eastec 2 years ago, can't remember the name but a bigger company bot the assets from Bridgeport and was refurbishing them, will sell you a refurb or rebuild yours to new specs

per the gossip, some of the last machines made by Bridgeport dropped off in quality when they didn't have funds to maintain their equipment, no way to verify that unless some old timers can

Bridgeport was bought out by Hardinge Corp....I suspect there quality will be going up in the near future, if it hasn't already....

The Hardinge company imports the castings from Singapore (I think) Assembled in USA, in Elmira NY.

A Bridgeport is a milling machine used for machining parts. Most common machine tool, about $12,000 new.

The Bridgeport machine was made in Bridgeport Conneticut hence the name. There are other manufacturers but the Bridgeport was considered the finest amoung all verticle mills for quite some time.

Does your run on 230 VAC?

Redneck, $3,000 is certainly a fair price to pay for a nice old Bridgeport mill. I have used both Bridgeport and clones for many years, and when you have to make your living on one, the clones just dont measure up. The nice thing about a Bridgeport is that you can also add periferials to match. Does yours have power feed, and is it 110v or 220? The DRO"s are pretty easy to have repaired. Let us know how it all works out when you get it in place and begin using it.

That sounds good. No power feed and power drawbar means it probably wasn't used for production type stuff.

You're better off without the power drawbar in a home shop. Especially when it's got a variable speed head. I've seen it tear out the bushings on about 6 of 'em. There's plenty of used parts out there to fix up an older DRO.
