Are there some REAL battery experts here who know whether or not there is an ideal value or value range for the current from trickle chargers to be applied to lead-acid batteries?

I don't know what you consider a "real" expert - I probably don't qualify. But - I've had a bit of experience with modern battery charger technology -it's a major issue with people using photo-voltaic panels, diesel gensets, and battery banks to run their homes with hybrid systems. I've got 24 batteries here at the house and a smaller 12 battery system for my cabin in the Adirondacks. When someone is using that many batteries - preserving their life is an important issue. So -from what I've seen and read - there has been more research on battery charging with solar related equipment then there has been for cars, trucks, and tractors. A good charger has a battery temperature sensor since the best charge rate is dependent on ambient temperature of the battery. Besides the float mode, there is also an cell-equalization mode that overvolts the batteries once in a while and helps to keep all the cells in each battery even. Also, the chargers have different settings depending if the battery is flooded lead-acid, lead-calcium, absorbed glass mat AGM, or Gel-cel. I'm not going to cite all the figures here - they are easy to find. At room temperature 70 degrees F a conventional flooded lead acid battery is charged at the following rate: Float = 13.4 volts, Equalization voltage = 14.6 volts. For sealed "maintenance free" auto batteries = Float = 13.2 and Equalization = 14.3. These are still somewhat general settings and you can get more specific settings from the battery manufacturers.

A little more info on batteries that hopefully will help explain things.

Lead acid batteries float at a constant voltage (as noted above), not at a constant current. A charger which forces a fixed amount of current, like 1/2 amp, through a lead acid battery will eventually overcharge it unless the available current is less than the leakage current. In this case, the charger will serve to offset some of the self discharge and keep the battery charged longer.

Lead acid maintenance chargers need to set the float voltage and let the battery draw whatever current it takes at that voltage (up to the maximum the charger can supply). This is just like the charge system in an automobile, which regulates at a fixed voltage, and only limits charge current to what the alternator (or generator) can supply without overheating.

On the other hand, NiCad batteries like are used in most cordless tools float at a constant current, which is why they can be left on a simple current limited trickle charger (like a wall wart) indefinitely.

most all of the chargers I have used or seen on trickle are at about 500MaH or 1/2 amp. The 1/2 amp charge over expended periods of time will not charge a battery dry and will compensate for low current discharge. Hope this answers your question.

Nowadays, the automatic "battery tenders", or float chargers, whatever you choose to call them, are so cheap there's no use to worry about a simple fixed-rate trickle charger.

Furthermore, many of them are "high frequency", which impose a high frequency pulse along with the DC, which is reputed to prevent battery plate sulfation, and even to partially restore batteries that have begun to sulfate.

I have about a half-dozen of them on various tractors and vehicles, including 2 on a 24-Volt Deere 4020. Over several years, I've had not trouble with the chargers, and very good results from the batteries with their use.

Extended battery life, and quick, easy starts of seldom-used equipment make them very usefull things to have!

I tend to be overly cautious, and make sure they are installed well away from anything burnable, and I install a 5 Amp fuse in-line with the battery connection, as some are in use at a remote location, where I may not even check on them for a month or two, and I want to be as safe as possible in the event of any failure as they age.

The ones I have are Vector, I think now labeled "Black and Decker", from WaldoWorld.

They're Chinese, unfortunatly, but that's how it goes nowadays. I suppose some others will chime in about the more "upscale" brands.

However, they readily available, and are not very expensive, and, so far, have been doing the job for me. The units run cool, and I have not noticed any signs of the batterys being overcharged, pushing out electrolyte.
