Have a little Kubuta generator thats 10 years old and started to plug up the sediment dish. Checked the tank and it is coming to pieces inside, all rusted. So ordered another tank for it, which was costly.

Just wondering what I should have done to avoid this? It maybe got use once every 6 months or so, in winter and summer, not very often. Should the tank be left full, or totally empty? What about in cold winter months?

You could always clean out the old tank with THE WORKS toilet bowl cleaner then coat it inside with RED-KOTE tank sealer.

It should be full at all times. Use gas stabilizer, change the gas if you don't run it for extended periods of time.

The air and moisture in the tank are what is rusting it, so keeping it full will eliminate the cause.

Excellent advice from bawick. This reminded me of something we did on the farm to counteract the very same problem. When returning from the field with a tractor or other machine in the evening, we always filled the gas or fuel tank right then to force all the air out of the tank so there was no moisture that could condense overnight.
