Poulan chainsaw carb help needed?

I have a Poulan Pro 235 chainsaw that I bought in 1989. It doesn't have alot of hours on it and has run flawlessly. The other day I was trimming some large branches and the chain needed adjusting. I shut it down and adjusted the chain and it started hard, but I finished. I looked at it when I got back to the shop and it would run, but not idle down. I adjusted the carb to specs and it still ran the same. I put it aside and this weekend looked at it again. It would not run unless I squirted gas mix in the carb. I checked the hose and filter and they are both fine. I've never taken one of these carbs apart and would like a little help on tips and what I should look for.

Any help is greatly appreciated.

When you checked the hose (gas line) was it tested for cracks? A crack in the line will suck air. 15 years old for a gas line seems a little too long. I use model plane fuel line @ 65� a foot.

Does it have an impulse line from the carb to the crankcase? On my poulan pro 305 this rotted off by the crankcase.

The only thing I can help you is to tell you what I was told and it worked for me. Several years ago I too bought a very Cheap Poulan, because it too was a hard starter. Told a friend about it, who was a Poulan dealer. Said to throw away the instuctions. turn the cab. needles 5 or 6 turns open then try and start it. I tried it and with the second pull it started and to this day still starts and runs ok. But it is a very heavy piece of equipment to do a lot of sawing with.

One other thing to check is the air filter. I have an older Stihl and when after using it awhile, and I shut it down, it is a dickens to get started. Found that if I blow out the air filter it will start right up. First time it happened I did the whole carb troubleshooting and adjusting route. Turn out it was just starved for air.
