In 18 to 24 inch long fluorescent lamps that have starters it is common for the starter to not work due to the film type capacitor used. I know that the starter can be opened and a ceramic capacitor can be substitued but I cannot remember the size in microfarads. Anyone know the specs.?

Most capacitors in the starter are just used for RF suppresion and are not critical as to value in the 1000uuf or .001uf range. The voltage is critical because there can be a surge from the ballast that produces up to 1000 volts. Most will work without the capacitor but not when it is shorted. Just look for noise on your radios and tv.

I was of the opinion that the cap. gives some boost to the start situation with the builtin relay/neon bulb arrangement along with suppresion. Is this not correct? Thanks for the response.

Normally the capacitor is just a filter. There is some lights that have external capacitors of about 4uf that work with the ballast. Most lights just need a switch or relay contact closure until the lights light. Look at this site Link

Open one up - it's probably marked right on the capacitor.

Already done that but all that I can find are the mylar type with no markings. Any chance that you have one that you could look into?
