Air compressor problem

My old 1 1/2hp Sears air compressor from about 1970 begins to go slower and slower after a normal startup. Eventualy the the belt starts squealing and the motor will slow down and stop if I don't pull the plug. I can get a 14" tire of a low 18lbs up to 32lbs with the motor unpluged. It looks like the tank pressure is 32lbs at that point. If I start the compressor again, it labors to pump and slows down rapidly till I pull the plug. If I leave it for a few days it leaks down so the startup is easy, but will only run about half a minute before slowing down. Any ideas (Besides buying a new one)?

It is also very important to maaintain the correct voltage for the motor. I have an old "1978" Craftsman 1-1/2 hp, and if I go any more than 20 ft away from my electric pnl, the thing won't restart, not enough voltage to get it started again under a load. I'm working on getting the power Co. to increase the size of my service feeders. I have some big equipment and when something big starts it raises havoc with other equipment. If your voltage at the outlet drops more than three volts when a piece of equipment is running, not starting, there's a problem. even two volts is a bit much.

Have you checked the oil?? If it has oil that is. May need an oil change and or you may have water in the oil. Also as the others have said your belt may be loose

Belt is too loose. Tighten it up or replace it with a new one if you can't get it to stop slipping. May also have oil on it.

My compressor did the same thing when the belt was loose. When the pressure starts to build and the belt slips some, the pump does not turn fast enough and that makes it much harder to turn for the motor so it drags the motor down.

Gary

my old speedaire compressor does the same thing. in cold weather ( less than 40 deg) it squeels like a pig. i turn it off at the switch and then back on and after a few times it is normal.
