I have a fireplace on the main floor of my house and a woodburning stove in the basement. When it's below 20 degrees and no wind, I can never get draft on the basement woodburner. It has an 8" pipe vs. the 10" pipe on the fireplace. The other night, I took my shop vac and a towel as a gasket, and blew air up the pipe, thus reversing the downdraft I've been getting, works like a charm, takes only 30 seconds.

Thanks Stan, my wife always corrects me because I try to say it like it is spelled.

Have you ever tried just lighting a page of newspaper to get it started drawing?

Yep, I tried the newspaper thing, did not work. I once tried lighting a fire in it like that, takes quite a while to break the thermal barrier in the pipe, it usually has negative draw. The shop vac worked great and quick, just a few seconds.

That is what we do. Cover the floor of the stove with rolled tight wads of single sheets of news paper. Cover with a layer of kindling sticks. Put on top a couple small split logs. On that a full news paper sheet, crumpled a bit, stuck in the back by the hole. Light the top, light the bottem. Crack the door 1" for a minute or so, and WHALLA... no dust no fuss 8^)

WHALLA is how you say it, Voila is how you spell it. Just for those who didn't already know that.

This concludes today's French lesson.

Geez, Stan I would not expect to find a pedant in a place called Oly .... maybe "pedant" is a bit too strong, but consider it a compliment. Takes one to know one, and in this case it really does!

Thanks, Tim

People who know me would probably tell you that pedant is not too strong a way to put it. It doesn't bother me though; way down inside I know that my mind is stuffed full of lots more useless BS than any of those people can begin to imagine. I choose to think of that as a good thing because there's nothing I can do about it anyway.

Oly is Olympia, the state capital. I call it that in memory of Olympia beer, the terrible swill that used to be brewed here. Olympia is a nice town that's currently hell-bent on becoming a real city ASAP so it can lose everything that's nice about it. I'd move back to Seattle except: 1)it became a city while I was away; 2)I can't afford to live there now, and; 3)I'm too old to willingly accept spending 25% of my waking hours stuck in traffic.

Merry xmas, Stan

And a Merry Christmas to you and yours Stan.

I have a friend who lives about an hour SE of Seattle; and has some land with a vacation trailer on the Olympic pennisula. I went to visit him once, in 1988 (I usually see him when he is here visiting family). That is beautiful country, we talk about going out again but have not gotten around to it.

Regards,
Tim
