Need some help. I have a Miller "MAXTRON 450" welder. It was purchased by a friend new back in 1996. I aquired it in late 97 for a very large some of money. It has been in my shop covered over, and kept polished,And has never been used,from oct1997. I have no idea how it works what it takes to work! Except it looks good! Dose any one know any thing about these welders? Are They any good? It has digital read out all kind of plug ins.And I know I was told its single Phase? I have $4500.00 invested in this thing, will sell it for $1000.00 or trade for dead or rough tractor? Any help? Thanks

Hey Short Bolt,Dad got a got a Maxtron 450 off Ebay a few years ago that he and I use in our equipment repair business. As for power it can be changed internally to be used on either single or three phase. Single phase it's rated at like 350 amps at 100% duty cycle and I believe 450 at 60%. On three phase it's 450 amps at 100% and over 500 at 60%. It was designed to be used as an industrial machine and is built accordingly. From what I could find in my searching for him, prior dad purchasing his, it's the highest amp, highest duty cycle machine anybody ever built that will run on single phase. It's a DC only, constant current/constant voltage machine which means it can be used for MIG, TIG, or Stick, just about anything but welding aluminium since there's no AC or high freq. We looked for years for one that had the 100% duty cycle rating at the higher amperages since we often use it as the the power source for an automatic MIG buildup machine. Currenly ours has an S22M feeder attached running .052 wire out of a 500 lb drum. The 450 and the S22M is a good match but any feeder will do. I ran over 500 lbs of wire through it year before last in just a few weeks, buiding up bottom track rollers and other parts for two cranes. It ran at least 4 hours a day, 5 days a week for nearly 6 weeks doing the rollers along with some other hand work building the drive tumblers. Except for the hand work which was "intermittent" it I'd start it on a roller and it'd be running at 300 amps for close to 30 minutes at a shot with only a minute or two break between rollers. Basically it's one tough machine....I was told that new it ran around $5000 so it's well worth your asking price. Wish I had the extra, extra money to get it. I'd love to have it in my shop but I'm saving for a Lincoln TIG machine a friend of ours has so I can do aluminium. Good luck with the sale, it ought to be an easy one since the machine sells itself to anybody that knows anything about it.

Thanks !!! for all the info on the welder. guess I have some thing worth some money! I guess I should have talked to you before I priced it. Maybe I should have my little shop wired to make it work, find what it needs to work and have some one teach me how to use it! I guess I need to get it out of the box, and look at it more. Just reprice it. An advertisement to sell something at a certain price is not a contract---it's an offer for a contract. More important, nobody on this forum should want to take advantage of anyone else here.

Why don't you just ask for offers, and sell it for the best price you can get? If that's against the rules of this forum (I wouldn't know) just ask people to contact you privately. Sounds like a pretty interesting machine; I'd be interested, too.

I may be wrong on this, but I used to work at a welding supply business, and I have never seen a Miller over 350 that was single phase. There should be a tag on it that tells. I just looked in the current catalog and that machine isn't in there. Everything over 350 amp is 3 phase.

I'd be interested in your welder.
I have a 44' JD A hand start. older rebuild and paint, needs cylinder sleeve and piston (have spares) runs and on decent rubber.
Or a 47' JD G in pieces, block, head and pistons are sitting in the shop furnace room in goods condition. Have new rings, and gsakets from Deere.
Needs complete restore. Northern Central Pa.
