On this side of the border we use a galvanized version (1 1/4" dia.) stamped from 22 Ga. sheet metal. It has a recessed center to keep the screw head below the surface. Here, they are used to retain tar paper, roll roofing and styrofoam sheets. Building supply house specializing in roofing materials is the best place to find them.

Check out Woodworkers Supply or Rockler. They both should have them.

Don't know where you can just get the buttons except if you know someone at the factory but maybe find some metal strips and make some.

I don't know about buttons, but I've used fender washers for that job.
