After loosing a few deer and one elk from other brand scopes I switched. Most scopes are adequate for general hunting but by no means equal. For hunting you want the best optics you can afford. Notice I said best you can afford not the most expensive. Do some research and you will find construction (prism, clarity, light gathering capability and exit pupil diameter are the critical elements.
Personal choice is also reticle. I like heavy duplex so I can see the cross hairs in early am, late evening. Simmons are good scopes but do not have sufficient eye relief IMHO (scope will knock your brow), Tasco is fair but not very rugged if doing some rough hunting. Most of my old scopes were Bushnells and I was pleased. Nikon is to spendy for the lack of service. Swavorski is outragously priced and throws a green tint. On my rigs I now have Leupold 3x9x50 VariX II in Matte Black finish. After missing an elk due to fogged up scope my Dad convinced me to spend a few extra $$ and put one on my .300 Win Mag. I have since added it to my .270, wife's 30-06. The 50mm exit bell is a bit odd to get used to at first but over time it grows on you. Depending on your hunting rig you may need some different mounts to get the bell of the rifle barrel. Leupold is a great company and stand behind their product. They stand head and shoulders above their competition in service much like Thompson Center. FWIW
