O.T. Central vac.

Hey guys,
I'm almost ready to start hanging the sheet rock in the new home we're building and I'm concidering drilling a couple holes down through the floor in the wall cavity to give me the option of instaling a central vac system. I realize you might not have a clue, but do me a favor and holler to the wife and ask if it's worth my time and trouble.

Thanks guys,
I decided to do it. Asked local hardware store if he had the pipe and he said they used to carry everthing for central vacs but got out of it. He said he still had one unit left and would give me a real good price.
I asked him if the unit was worth as much as the 30' 8" DBH pine tree of mine his son broke delivering lumber this summer. It wasn't funny when it happend but I didn't say anything.The kid works hard and he felt as bad as could about it. His dad asked what it would take to make it right but I let it go. Maybe this would make us both feel better. :)
I'll find out tomorow.
I also decided to run speaker wire eveywhere.

Put in a central vac system when we had our house built 13 yrs. ago & have really been happy with it. Power unit is in the garage & it vents thru the wall to the outside, so anything it doesn't filter out goes outside. Vac. contractor did the install & the advantage is, you get the install done right--he made sure the wall fittings were in the best locations, they were wired properly, etc.

Put a nutone in the old house. Powerhead is robust, hose handle kept failing. I was working the indoor air quality angle and wanted the dust out of the house. Newer house, a little bigger, no central vac, no big deal from the misses, she hasn't asked for it. The weight of the hose, cover and attachment was about what the upright vac. 6 of one 1/2 doz of another.

We built new 3 yrs. ago. Installed a central vac and have been thankful ever since. Power Unit mounted in the garage and has an extra port for vacuming out the rigs.

We have 2 kickplates (entry doors - main and garage)and various outlets throughout. Get the hose cover to save your baseboards when dragging the hose around corners. Would have liked to install 1 more kick plate in the kitchen so just a quick sweep and done.

Other considerations -
Install speaker wires throughout house for full home stereo. This is great especially during holidays. Oversight was not installing wires in the walls for surround sound in TV area.

Install multiple coax cables (home runs) into each room, also consider some coax drops from the ceiling for wall mounted TV. Got 4 drops plus exra outlets on each wall of major rooms. Then TV and VCR can be hooked up in a variety of locations in the room. We have satillite.

Can also use the coax connections for cable modem. Oversight was not installing ceiling drops and power outlets for wall mounted TV for bonus room.

Install pest control vent tubes in the wall. Then you can be your own exterminator without the "bug juice" on the floors and baseboards. Aerosol pesticides now available across the counter.

Also if rafters permit add plywood now so you have full attic floor to store stuff. They can shoot the insulation under the plywood.

If you can afford it consider dimmer switches vs. on/off to create lighting effects in the house. Contractor can buy them cheaper than you can. Oversight was thinking we would do later and then found out the cost of switches. This is an on-going effort right now.

I also have deep sink installed in garage to clean veggies, canning, gutting fish from the pond etc. Keeps Momma happy and if she is happy so is everyone else.

While you"re at it, now is the best time to run phone lines thuout the house. And run some computer lines too. Wire is cheap, and while you"re roughing in it the ideal time to run it.

I'd been doing some phone repairs at a chain of business', and they had them. The units themselves were not large, but the buildings were huge and immaculent, carpet too. I've never had one, never used one, but my guess is probably are excellent from what I saw. You just may be on to something there. I remember seeing 2" PVC ducted throughout.

We built our house three years ago,did much of the work ourselves(fatherinlaw is a contractor).It probably took a weekend to rough in, in addition to the pipe you have to run wire roughly the size of doorbell wire to each outlet so when you plug in the hose the unit comes on in the basement.Our unit came with 30 feet of hose. With a little planning I got away with 2 outlets on each floor, plus I left a couple of stubs capped off for future use. The unit we bought was a Nutone brand, the middle sized unit,it was plenty for our house which is 2 story and about 2700 square feet. My wife loves it she doesn't have to drag the old vacuum cleaner up and down the stairs. Good luck with your new house. Mike

It's definitely worth the trouble to install a central vac. They're not that hard to rough in, either. When we moved to a two-storey, 1908 brick house I found that the pocket doors separating the hall and living room use a double wall with space for a door between them. It proved also to have space for a 2" pipe at the back of the cavity. In two hours I had outlets on three floors. Even better, I found an unused 2" pipe in the stone foundation just below a basement window. It quickly became the exhaust port.

That was about 23 years ago. All we have done since to the unit was empty it and replace a hose and beater bar.

A family member has one which filters the air, rather than expelling it to the outside as both of our units have done. It seems much less satisfactory. If possible, get one which catches the dirt in a cyclone, but exhausts outside.

Both of the units we bought were the cheapest available at the time: the first was from Sears, the second from Hoover, bought at the local lumber yard as a kit.

We had one installed when we built the house (3 years in March)empty it twice a year and it was cheaper than one of the vacs they sell door to door.

Also consider putting one outlet outside,( with your own hose of course) to keep your vehicles clean. Have had central vacuum systems installed in both of our recent homes, the guys that do the installations are masters at getting those pipes up through the walls. It it one appliance you will never regret having. As others have said, virtually no maintenance just empty it once in a while. Some even have little windows on the canister side to let you see if it is full.
