I got a round piece of brass 2 1/2" X 4" that I would like to make into a hammer. I would like a wood handle, all the hammer handles I have seen are oval in shape were they fit the hammer head. I have a smaller home made brass hammer that has a brass handle and its not user friendly Its to heavy in the handle area and will not stay put in yer hand when ya hit sumin with it, always won'ts to spin around its a PITA to use so i need to rehandle it also. Think'in I may have'ta have a custom handle made outta wood, utter than strength I don't know why the wood handles are oval were they fit the werk'in end, Enny ideas

You could use a piece of 3/4" thin wall conduit, EMT. Put it in a vice and made it oval.

Hobo, I couldnt find a hickory handle for one of my hammer heads that had a round hole rather than the usual oval one. I bought a handle that looked about the right size and whittled the danged thing down so it would fit into the round hole and it has been useful for two years (so far). HTH

Piece of 3/4 or so aluminum round stock. Knurl the hand grip part and bore a hole in the brass and turn the handle for an interference fit and press together. If you are afraid of it coming loose, drill thru the head/handle and drive a roll pin thru.

All airline mechanics have brass hammers and most make them. You also could buy a wood handle and use a CNC mill to make the hole in the brass to match.

At one time, a machinist at work had such a program, buy him lunch and he would machine your brass head to take a handle off the Mac truck. Lots of mechanics made them this way at work.

Hobo,

The head of a hammer is oval to prevent the head from spinning on the handle. Also if you take a close look at a hammer head you will find that the handle opening in the head is a taper (kinda like a cutoff V). The top of the hammer head opening is wider than the bottom. This is done so that when the wedge is inserted into the handle, the wood of the handle is flared into the taper trapping the head on the handle. This keeps the head from flying off when you swing the hammer. To make one from brass, drill through the brass to the width of the handle, and then file a oval that tapers toward both faces of the head.

I am makein a hammer not replacein a handle on a hammer or hope to make a handle, I got sum good ideas from the other post Thanks and thank you also. Snap-on izz not very welcome at my place rite now I have had 3 extra good snap-on guys in the past 20 years and sum how snap-on has figgerd out how to git rid ofem. Only thing I kin figger out izz once they pay off their lease and kin make sum good money snap-on figgers out a way to financially runem. Snap-on must make all their money offin new tool trucks stocked with minimal tools to git started or unless they gottem by the balls they dont needem. I am sort of gitin tired of breakin in snap-on dealers. Thats a whole nutter topic, I got a free chunk of brass and dont want the mess I got with the utter home made one. I do have a hatchet with a metal handle and I dont like the hatchet so I may figger out a way to marry the two together.

Braze a flat tang to the brass head at the balance point. Cut a kerf into a hard wood handle. Drill and bolt the handle through the tang. Shape and sand the handle to your liking. Belt sander works well and will shape the brass tang if needed.

You might be able to find a handle which fits your hand comfortably, and then either modify the other end where it goes into the hammer head, or simply copy the best features of that handle out of a new piece of hickory.

Another option might be to modify that hammer head to an oval shape with a coarse rat-tail file. The oval shape allows for more strength and prevents the head from trying to rotate on the handle.
