Was cleaning the chimney for my wood stove in anticipation of today's snow. Had my arm stuck as far up in thimble as possible trying to get as much soot/ash as possible when the paper filter on the vacuum ruptured and spread dust everywhere.

Coated two rooms of the house with dust before I knew what happened.

The manufacturer doesn't make filters to fit my model anymore so I was improvising. Hate to throw away anything that still works.

Wife wasn't happy...

Have been TOLD to pick out which vac will be my Christmas present.

Seems to be only a couple manufacturers of wet/dry vac. Anbody have experience with Rigid ? They have a lifetime warranty.

I have both craftsman and a 12 gal ridgid.
I dont like the new craftsman ,container is awkward to clean.

Shop Vac makes a good one. They have paper filter bags you put inside to catch all the dirt so the actual filter doesn't get plugged all the time. You just change the bag and throw away with the dirt in it.

Sears as well as others I'm sure offer a washable filter. When it gets dirty just wash it out and let it dry and go again---

Chuck: If you want a vacuum that woun't blow back dust when you turn it on , get a Fein Vacuum, IMO it the best one out there. They come with a 5 Micron filter to collect dust or you can get paper bages so you can collect your junk and just throw it away, even a HEPA filter is available for the vacuums. see attached link for the information. Just a warning they are more expensive than the ones you get at the big boxes, it is quiet ( 87 decebiles) and IMO well worth the extra dollars and it should last you many years of great service. Also be aware of those horse power rating like 6hp vacuum. thats a load of BS. Good luck

Got an older sears I bought for around 100 bucks on sale several years ago. Well pleased with it. But filters are a little hi. I wait till I see the sale, buy one filter and get one half price. SOme reason or another I think rigid makes the sears vacs now?
I usually can blow the filters out a few times before discarding.

I used to work in a large data center that had smoke detectors in the ceiling and floor..... ..One of the fellows brought a shop vac in and turned it on.....the room filled with dry wall dust and before I could get to him to tell him or to shut the thing off the fire alarms went off..... .about 500 people left the building and the fire department was there in a matter of minutes.....needless to say, he was a little red faced for awhile..... .that happens from time to time, frustrating as it is..... .don't beat yourself up to bad!

Sears unit is good, except filter is $20. I have a Shop Vac 610, very quiet and filters around $12. Very easy to move around.

I have a Craftsman wet/dry vac. with removable motor that turns into a blower. Very nice unit, holds a lot and very powerful, not too loud either. It has the pleated paper filter which can be cleaned. I got a free small wet/dry vac. with it, all for $89.99. You really have to watch Sears for the good deals or you'll pay too much. I don't know who makes it and it doesn't have the lifetime guar. like the Rigid.
