Propane reg. freezing - need methanol injector

I recently bought a new 500 gallon propane tank. I set it in place, but let the propane dealer do the initial setup - which was supposed to be purging and filling. I wasn't there when he did it, but whatever he did, it was not done right. We're hardly into winter yet, and the regulator has frozen up four times already. The propane guy said he was coming back two weeks ago to add some methanol and never showed up. He hasn't been returning my phone calls either. So now I'm trying to fix it from freezing. I suspect the guy never did a proper job of purging the tank when he first installed it. Now, from what I calculate - a 500 gallon tank is usually filled with 400 gallons of LP. 400 gallons of LP = 1700 lbs. The recommended rate of methanol for 1700 lbs. is 48 ounces. So, now I need a way to get it into a pressurized tank. I know there are special hand-pumps made just for this purpose. They pump the methanol in through a check-valve so the LP can't back up when pumping. Anybody come up with an alternative way of doing this without having to buy special tools? I've got a shop full of auto and diesel tools - but I'm not a propane technician.

I have had propane heat for since 1966 with 500 gal tanks and never heard of a regulator freezing up with temps of -20* F or more

I am new to using propane as heating fuel. My supplier installed a 330 gallon tank with 10 PSI regulator right at the tank, then piped to a 1/2 PSI regulator next to the foundation wall. Piping inside the house is all at 1/2 PSI. They say all my piping has only gas, no liquid. They fill the tank to 80% and want me to call for fillup when the tank is at 20%. It rarely gets below 10 deg here. Never have heard methanol additive mentioned. They tell me the tank size is related to how fast the propane is drawn off. A small tank might hold plenty for me, but the liquid needs surface area to evaporate (change to gas) at the rate that the equipment requires.

Yes, so you've got the two stage setup like I've got - and T_bone says is dangerous and against code. Final pressure at the house after the second regulator is usually 11 inches water column which is equal to around 2 - 4 PSI. Since the pressure is so low, usually a manometer is used instead of a gauge. Putting methanol in the tank is standard procedure anywhere that's cold. It is also put into the LP before you get it (winter blend). Gas pipes are often sized in the same way wires are sized for electrical circuits. With electrical circuits, the longer the distance to be traveled - or more demanding the load - the higher the voltage or larger the gauge of wire must be used. With LP - the more distant the tank or demand is for BTUs, the higher the pressure or larger diameter pipe is used. Tanks are never filled completely - and the fill rate can vary from summer to winter. But - as you said - 70-80% is the range. Temperatures get -30F here, but most of the regulator freeze-ups we've had ocurred during rapid changes in the weather - like after having a few days of 40 degree F weather, and then having it drop fast. Last freeze-up happened when it was 28 degrees F here. My LP guy came yesterday and pumped in close to a gallon of methanol. He said he had four other customers in my area with the same problem. So - I'm not sure what to make of that. Did he get a bad load of gas, or do some bad tank installations? I have no idea and will probably never know. I've lived in this area for 35 winters - and had never experienced a propane reg. freeze-up before buying this new 500 gallon tank.

Regardless of who says what about it, the setup I have was installed by the propane supplier and the heating contractor, was inspected by the building inspector, and the delivery driver tells me it is the standard system. I know of no reason why this system is not as good as it gets. Article in the paper here yesterday about moisture in natural gas. For the pipelines, the pump seals quickly fail from the dry gas and some moisture is added to prolong seal life. Not sure if propane is pipelined as gas or liquid, but the propane gas probably is equally hostile to pump seals. That could explain moisture in the propane. Liquid propane is used as a recoverable solvent in certain industrial operations.

Might be a load of wet propane if there is such a thing,or a load without methanol winter blend. I had one load freeze the regulator several times,never before or since on the 1000 gallon tank and plumbing that has been in place for 30+ years. BTW My tank is 150 ft from the house and has always had the dual regulator system,one at the tank(10-12 psi indicated on the guage) and the low pressure regulator at the house.

JD, please let the propane company handle it. I have been a FF for years and have been to calls involving people working on their own propane systems with the wrong tools. Bad things happen. It sounds like they either didnt purge and get a get vacuum, didnt put in any methanol or hooked the reg. up on the liquid side. If its on the liquid side the methanol wont help you. One thing I have learned and do now, I bought 2 100 pound bottles and can hook them to my regulator at the big tank if for soem resaon they cant get to me. Then in the summer they are great for the fish frier, grill, smoker. A little pricey to fill sometimes but, I dont like cold showers or cold floors in the morning

Yes - good idea and I did just that. I bought two new 100 lbs tanks last year and keep them on hand for when there are problems.

Hi Jdemais,

Man, where to start. I believe there's more to the story that were NOT hearing about.

I would bet that by now you've pi$$ed off your LP supplier and that is why he won't return your phone calls. I have NEVER seen a LP supplier that would refuse to correct a system mistake that he filled. I would also bet if you called another LP supplier in the area you would be directed to call the Company who filled and installed your tank.

Code does not allow for a residental home to have a high pressure LP system. Code requires the gas presuure to be at usage pressure at the entry shut off valve to the structure.

It's been too long ago since I've refferenced LP service requirements so I'm not even going to look into my refference books to resolve your problems, but in general you increase gas line size from the tank to the outside shut off valve to account for pressure drops on long runs. You do NOT increase gas pressure to over come this pressure loss.

Your gas appliances are NOT set up to use high pressure gas nor from a safety stand point do you want high pressure gas inside a residental structure. Your working on borrowed time here!!!

Most LP suppliers have a service connect fee for this very reason. They set the tank and make sure all gas lines are sized correct with the correct amount of pressure required of the appliances and the system is leak free.

At this point, I strongly urge you too make amends with your LP company and let them tell YOU what you need to change to come with-in code requirements.

If you don't burn/blow your house down before you use your 500gal, I really doubt that anyone will refill your tank when you need more gas or just about the middle of dead winter.

My thoughts, take or leave it!

I don't know what the heck you're talking about. First, according to code, what I have is not only within code, it is the accepted standard in my area when tanks are more than 75 feet from a home. A tank is usually pressurized at 150 PSI. A single stage regulator drops that 150 PSI down to 2 PSI. A two-stage regulator does the same, but in two steps and thusly has two sets of pressure drops. Subsequently, it is less apt to freeze because such freezing often takes place at the site of a large pressure differential. With my setup, it is still two stage regulation - just does it with with separately housed regulators. In regard to your somewhat cryptic remark, i.e. " Man, where to start. I believe there's more to the story that were NOT hearing about." What are you alluding to? I've been here for 25 years - on top of a mountain with a steep dirt road that is considered "seasonal." Due to that, we've had many problems with running out of propane in the winter - usually because the delivery trucks are on a scheduled route. If the day comes when they were scheduled to come here, and the road was too icy for them to make it up, they'd skip our house and wait until the next delivery date. Often, we'd run out before that next time came. So, we asked for a bigger tank to buy us more time - and several companies told us "no" because we didn't use enough gas. And, to compound the issue - we have several older gas stoves with pilot lights - and some companies will not hook up to them. Then, we found a small company that assured us we'd never run out. They put their tanks in - one for the house and one for the barn (for hot water). We ran out twice the first winter. Then, a regulator went bad, and full pressure gas came into the house - and the stove was like a blow-torch. Since then, I've installed double regulators on everything that needs it - but most modern gas equipment already has its own backup regulator. So, after years of bullsh*t, we found a company that told us - if we paid for our own tank - they'd fill us at the lowest rate on an ad hoc basis. So, that's what we did. Paid around $800 for a new 500 gallon tank, bought new regulators - I set the tank in place, and the propane guy came over and filled it. It holds enough gas that no one has to come here all winter. So, now - the only problem is the moisture.

Now, what is it you're referring to in regard to high pressure at my appliances ?? You've lost me again. My system has a 10 PSI regulator (coded red) at the tank, and 2 PSI regulators at the house (coded green) - on the outside - with shut-off valves and side-taps for a pressure gauge testing - before entry through the wall and into the house. This is a common and acceptable practice to cut down on pipe size for long runs. What you said, "You do NOT increase gas pressure to over come this pressure loss" is simply NOT true. There are some homes in my area that run even higher pressure - usally a 20 PSI regulator at the tank. Also, in regard to you saying you've never experienced a propane technician that "would refuse to correct a system mistake that he filled" - I've seen this happen with electricians, carpenters, heating contractors, auto mechanics, etc. I guess things are different where you live - but the reality here is still the same. In fact, the company that was providing us with LP gas when the regulator went bad and nearly blew the house up? I called him and told him what happened, and he said he was busy and it might be a week before he'd come here and change the regulator. So, I told him that if he wasn't going to do it - I would. He got angry and forbade me to touch "his tank and regulator." I informed him the equipment was on my property, it was dangerous, and I would fix as necessary if he wouldn't. I did fix it, and then sent him a letter cancelling service. That's when I decided to change companies again - and finally buy my own tank. By the way, the gas guy came this afternoon. He kind of took me by surprise because he came on foot. Ends up his truck would not make it up the road - since he couldn't get his 4WD to work. It's a fairly new Dodge 1/2 pickup. But, he's the second guy I met recently who's four-wheel drive wouldn't engage. Makes me glad to have older trucks with mechanically engaged 4WD. So, he came on foot with a gallon jug of methanol in one hand, and a hand-pump injector in the other. He put it in, we'll see how it goes. ADVANTAGES>Link OF A TWO STAGE SYSTEM - less freeze ups and more consistent pressure at the house.

The installation of a two-stage system ---- one high pressure regulator at the container to compensate for varied inlet pressures, and one low pressure regulator at the building to supply a constant delivery pressure to the appliances --- helps ensure maximum efficiency and trouble free operation year round. It is important to note that while pressure at the appliances can vary up to 4 inches w.c. using single stage systems, two stage systems keep pressure variations within 1 inch w.c.. Regulator freeze-up occurs when moisture in the gas condenses and freezes on cold surfaces of the regulator nozzle. The nozzle becomes chilled when high pressure gas expands across it into the regulator body. This chilling action is more severe in single stage systems as gas expands from tank pressure to 11" w.c. through a single regulator nozzle. Two-stage systems can greatly reduce the possibility of freeze-ups and resulting service calls as the expansion of gas from tank pressure to 11" w.c. is divided into two steps, with less chilling effect at each regulator. In addition, after the gas exits the first stage regulator and enters the first-stage transmission line, it picks up heat from the line, further reducing the possibility of second stage freeze-up.

Hi Jdemaris,

I can see where you have a misuderstanding to what I stated so let me see if this helps.

All your links that you posted confirm just what I stated;

Where you have a problem with this statement is you don't have your temperature/pressures(T&P) correct for LP nor is your water column pressure correct.

I've listed some T&P for LP at the temperatures and pressures discussed in this thread.

LP T&P:
89.78�f = 150psig
28� =----- 49psig 0� =----- -24psig -20� =-----11psig
-30� =----- 6psig
-39� =----- 2psig


So as you can see you can't have 150psi of tank pressure during the heating season as when it's 28� abiment your tank pressure would be 49psi.

Lets now define what W.C. pressure is. Approx 28" of wc is equal to 1psig. 11"wc would then be about 0.4psig or considered low pressure according to UBC. Any pressure greatter than 1psi is considered high pressure according to UBC (Universal Building Code).

So then your statement that 11"w.c. is about 2psi to 4psi is wrong and in that pressure range you would have a high pressure LP system hence my comments that you can't have a high pressure LP system inside the structure as code does not allow this.

You stated:

This is a true statement and 99% of all LP problems when used for heating fuel source have a problem here. Why?

Propane is another type of refrigerant, R290 class3. If you refer to my recent article on how the refrigeration process works then you will have a better understanding of why regulators freeze even when the LP system is designed correct. I'm not going to repeat what I've already written so if you have specific question please ask.

Another cause of regulator freeze up is either the regulator(s) have not been sized correct or the supply pipe could be sized wrong. Regulators are sized in the amount of BTU volume they can pass without freeze up. This is usually a huge problem as people like to down size pipe or regulators to save on install costs.

Again refer to your link and add up all the gas demand as stated in input BTU/hr rating and that will be the size of regulator you will need. Generaly, regultors are now stated in 1/4million BTU increments,ie; 250,000BTU, 500,000BTU etc: and are stamped in the regulator casting. Use the next largest size when input BTU gets close to regulator rating.

your�s to my lack of comprehension. That is ridiculous. I posted the query because I was
trying to avoid purchasing a tool for a one-time job - thus my question about a hand-pump methanol injector. You replied with several non-sequitors and a few erroneous statements. Now, you are citing useless facts that have little to do with the issue. I am not an idiot, nor am I inexperienced or uneducated when it comes to
mechanics, electronics, or simple word comprehension. E.g., here are few statements
from your first post:

Did I state anything that indicated the supplier was angry?

Again - your statement has little to do with reality. My system has been inspected by
several LP companies and all is within code.

And . . . the facts you�ve now posted relating to temperature versus pressure, water-column equivalents to PSI, etc. have little to do with any of this. My problem was water in the tank and me trying to get some methanol in to treat it. Now, if I was writing a Master�s Thesis, or sitting for my Doctoral Dissertation - perhaps we could merrily throw these facts back and forth and play word games and conduct thought experiments liked a couple of bored college professors. I didn�t, and still don�t see the
utility of providing every possible climatic condition and the subsequent variations in
pressure that exist in an uncontrolled environment (i.e. outdoors). Yes, if I were in
Alaska, propane remains liquid at - 40F and I�d have NO gas flow when things got real cold - but so what?

I asked a simple straight forward question, and you�ve not only replied twice with
nonsense - you seem incensed that I won�t acquiesce and believe it.

Have seen the local propane guy put methanol in the tanks ,so I know you are right. Could you hire another propane supplier to do the alcohol dry job for you? An honest promise of some future propane purchase from him may help him decide to take on the liability of ANY kind of propane service to your system. Our sue happy public has ruined this countrys ability to do a good deed without risking being sued for everything you own. I suppose you could plumb a sealed tank with methanol in it capable if taking full propane tank pressure into the vapor withdrawl valve on the tank head. When the pressure equalizes in both tanks,the methanol will gravity feed into the propane tank. It takes a special vapor withdrawl fitting to depress the check valve in the tank valve. This still involves a lot of cobbling,and the parts cost is more than someone with the right equipment and knowledge doing it.

I have some knowledge on the subject. There is nothing dangerous here. My problem is water in the tank. Standard procedure for installation of a 500 gallon tank should have included a gallon of methanol when first installed. I suspect it was not done. The tank also should have been purged, hopefully by vacuum. I don't know exactly what was done. When first filled, it was put at 70% capacity. I installed a high pressure regulator at the tank (10 PSI) and low pressure regulators at the house (2 PSI) due to a 100 foot distance. So, now I am trying to come up with a way of injecting liquid methanol into a tank that is at 150 PSI. A special hand-pump is made just for this purpose, but I don't have one. I hate to buy one since it's unlikely I'll ever use it again for anything. The unit made for this has a check valve so LP cannot run backward while pumping in the methanol. They are for sale at an industrial supplier: Link Methanol is supposed to be added at the rate of 12 ounces per 420 lbs. A 500 gallon tank - filled to 400 gallons equals 1700 pounds of propane. So I need 48 ounces of methanol added to my tank.

if you bought a brand new tank, it was not pressirized from the factory, but had a vaccum pulled on the tank. we put 1 gallon of methenol in each new tank to absorb any moristure in the tank or propane. a liquid withdral valve will be outside of the hood covering the vapor valve, also the vapor valve will have a spit on top to tell when it is full, also a fitting to hook the vapor hose from the truck to relive pressure when filling in real hot weather.

I have been working around LP for about 20 years. Have about 5 tractors that run on the stuff plus heating home, shop, and drying grain.

Never heard of mixing in methonal.

Number one thought is not to let the tech that did the initial work within 25 miles of your place. Chances are he won't get that close anyway.

My educated guess as to what happened is you have a tank that was for a grain dryer or had been a anhydrous ammoninia tank.

What the tech did was hook your regulator that was built to run on vapor to the liquid supply valve.

What is happening is Liquid is being drawn from the tank and run through the regulator where it vaporizes. Just like in air conditioning it draws heat from the surrounding air which is causing your freezing.

Sure way to confirm is take the regulator off the tank. PUT OUT YOUR CIGARETTE!! Then open the tank valve. If you get a white cloud my suspicions are correct. Find another valve on the tank that doesn't make the cloud and hook up to that and be happy.

DON'T WAIT TO DO THIS. IF I AM RIGHT YOU HAVE A DANGEROUS SITUATION. FURNACES AND LOW PRESSURE REGULATORS ARE NOT BUILT TO HANDLE TANK PRESSURE AND FLOWING LIQUID THROUGH THE ORIFICES THAT ARE MADE FOR VAPOR CAN MAKE YOUR HOUSE GO KAAAAA BOOOOO M!!!!

I have had a furnace tech do this same thing to me in the past. I caught it before anything was fired up. Funny thing is the liquid tank valve was pipe thread and regulator had a POL (old style reverse thread) fitting. Tech said he wondered why it threaded in so tough. Needless to say he isn't welcome back at my farm anymore. He is a nice enough guy but making mistakes like that are dangerous.

If you know of any Air conditioning and heating Techs around they have a hand operated pump for pumping oil into AC systems that might work for you it would work good, I just hope the seals in the pump will hold up to methanol.
