I got my first impact a month or so ago and used it yesterday (tried anyway) to take the wheel lugs off my Farmall 230 (1" nuts on lugs). It wouldn't loosen them!! My buddy got out his 3/4" breaker bar and they all came loose rather easily. I changed the settings on the impact from 1 to 6 and seemed to get no change. Its rated at 425 ftlbs. I had the compressor regulator set at 90 lbs as prescribed. Air was coming thru a 50 line. Do I need to set the air up some??? Anyone know why this thing doesn't have any oommph?? BobG in VA

Thanks for all the comments/suggestions. They all make sense and I'll try them! The wrench is sold by Harbor Freight but its their best 1/2" model-- they do sell IR as well, but I'd thought I'd take a chance). I'll look for the screw/hole that requires the oil, as I have been putting couple of drops in the NPT inlet into wrench. I like the idea of running it for a couple of minutes and switching thru the settings. Again, thanks for all the replies! I'll let y'all know how it goes after I get back out to the farm. BobG in VA

Try putting about a dozen drops of oil in the inlet between each bolt. All that extra oil keeps the air from bypassing around the vains. I learned the trick from the local tire shop, who has to do this to their 1" impact on some truck tires. I just bought a $500 IR ultra duty 3/4" impact rated at 1200 ft/lb and still had to use that trick to break certain bolts on my baler loose bolts loose.

I guess this was kinda risky, but it worked... I had a flat on my Skid-Steer, No luck breaking lugs loose, I brought a bottle of nitrogen & a regulator from the shop... Finally ended up using 250 PSI on a 1/2 inch IR Impact... I did duct tape some rags around the housing, & wore a faceshield, in case the impact decided to blow up... A Swench now makes jobs like that much easier...

If the impact has an oil resevoir built in with a screw to remove to fill it, do so. Also pour a few drops of air tool oil down the inlet. Free run the tool for a couple of minutes to loosen it up and work the oil into it. While you are free running it, adjust the 1 - 6 knob till it sounds the loudest and fastest free running. The change should be very noticable.

Use at least a 5/16 or better yet, a 3/8 ID air hose and yes, set the pressure up slightly. 90 psi is at the tool and the hose is causing a loss.

Unless this is a namebrand tool, it probably will have a problem with lug nuts that big.

I had a neighbor trying to remove blades off of a 5 ft finish mower deck on his tractor. I heard him beat on it for a half hour or so with his no name 1/2 impact. Finally he came over and asked if I had a 3/4 impact (I don't) but I gave him my Craftsman electric 1/2 impact (35 years old). Blade nuts came right off.

Sadly, cheap impacts are just that, cheap. I have a 1/2 Ingersoll-Rand at work. Beats the pants off most other impacts its size. IR makes a "Titanium" 1/2 impact, it is really powerful, and light too.

I had the same problem with a new impact wrench until I discovered the right place to put the oil. Mine has a hex screw which must be removed for the addition of oil. Putting the usual two drops into the end of the air hose the way I do for a nailer did nothing in this case.

Properly oiled, my cheap rip-off became a valuable tool.

At 50' , you'll be loosing pressure at tool . Boost it up to about 125 lb. You didn't say what brand impact it is . That'll make a difference if it's an alcheapo . Be sure to keep it oiled with special oil too . Be careful because they tend to throw sockets occassionally . Ken

You can turn your pressure up and it will help. Also the diameter of your hose will have an impact on the impact. Even though you have the pressure recommended you have to have the volume also. We have 3/8 id hose for airing tires and blow guns etc. Then we have 1/2 and 5/8 id hose for the impacts with the psi on the compressor set at 130 with a 100psi restart. Never have problems. Also give your impact a little air tool oil occasionally, it will make a difference to.

I have an impact gun that has 450ft lbs and never have any problems. But my compressor is set up to run at 130psi and the only line I have regulated is for the paint gun all other tools run at 130-80 psi. 130 is cut off and 80 is cut in. I do sometimes need to eait for the preassure to get up higher to do some things but other then that have no problems

nope, A breaker bar will usally out do a average 1/2 drive impcat wrench. I have one that drives 900 fps and Its stronger than a bar. When impacts are a real help is when your in tight places, or can do damage it with a bar. My 400fps and my 900+ units are worlds apart in useefullness. Price was $45 vs $200 though. Still, I only found the lower power impact usefull for limited applications. Worlds of difference between 450 torque and 900.
