I was going to take my ATV out to play in the snow, but somebody (ok, it was me) left the key on, thus draining the battery. After having the charger on all day yesterday and half the day today with no effect, figured I"d bring the battery in to warm up. When I pulled the battery out, I found it was frozen solid. Will this have done any damage to the battery? When it gets thawed out, will it take a full charge? I bought the battery this spring, so I"d like to keep using it if possible. Thanks for any help.

Had to charge a battery at work on a rolloff truck one time,Boss said hook up charger and put it on med. Cold as !@#$ out of course left it on for about 20-25 minutes then """"KABOOM!!!!!"""".. Blowed the top clear off of the battery. =Case in point=

NEVER charge a frozen battery or you "may" wear plastic, lead,or worse sulfuric acid

Rich Since you bought the battery this past spring, it may still be covered by warranty, take it back and get a new one.

The specific gravity level of the battery electrolyte determines its freezing point, just like the specific gravity of engine coolant. If 1000 is the figure for water then a fully charged battery may go as high as 1300. The max at full charge depends upon how much sulfuric acid is used. Using more acid may add a little to the voltage but it shortens the life of the battery. The cranking on the original battery in my 97 Ranger was slow this a.m. and without checking further Im on my way to a battery manufacture to get a new one.

Guess what? You now have the battery core you need for buying a new battery. Most of the time it will cause the case to brake at some place and of course then you have battery acid where you don't want it. Freezeing can also warp the plates/short the plates in the battery. 90% of the time the battery is now junk.

This is the first battery I"ve ever seen frozen. The ATV sits in an uninsulated, unheated garage, what can I do to prevent this from happening again? Should I just bring the battery inside when I"m not using the ATV?

A charged battery won't freeze. Need to run the vehicle every few weeks, or put trickle charger on it now & then, and - don't leave the key on. :)

You told us what you did wrong - you left the key on. Don"t leave the key on and you won"t have to worry about it!!!

A properly charged battery, in good condition, won't freeze.

However, a "dead" battery WILL freeze.

So, just be sure it doesn't get discharged, and it'll be OK,

Just out of curiosity, how "dead" does a battery have to be before it'll freeze? Completely drained or just not fully charged?

I have one in an old tractor that the last time I tried to start it, it wouldn't turn over fast enough to fire. I quit cranking before the battery ran completely down. It's been sitting outside and it's been below freezing for a couple weeks here.

NEVER attempt to jump or charge a frozen battery.
It MAY take a charge when thawed, more than likely it will not deliver the previous out put. I would replace it.
