The difference? Simple . . . in reply to Robert in Md, 12-03-2005 19:47:32
Robert --

In the Mechanical Engineering world, a bolt is a headed fastener that takes a nut whereas a screw is a threaded fastener that directly engages internal threads in a larger part that has some function other than simply holding a bolt in place.

I always thought that a hex cap screw was an Allen Head bolt.

I've always referred to an Allen head bolt as a hollow head cap screw, and a hex head would be referring to a bolt with six flat surfaces on the outside of the head, unlike that of a carriage bolt.

Hi Robert,

A cap screw is a bolt with a more carefully controlled body diameter. The body is that area between the end of the threaded area and the bottom of the head. For example, a hex head bolt of 1/4" nominal size has a body diameter of 0.260" maximum. A hex head cap screw of the same 1/4" nominal size has a body diameter within the limits of 0.250" maximum and 0.245" minimum. This is from ANSI B18.2.1, Square and Hex Head Bolts and Screws, Inch Series. A cap screw will typically have a fully machined unthreaded shank where the bolt will have an unthreaded shank that is in the as-rolled condition. Hex cap screws are sometimes called "finished hex bolts".

For special applications such as mounting clutch pressure plates, we had what were called "body fit" bolts. The unthreaded part was a bit larger diameter than the threads. Are these the same thing?
