OT - Cost of electrical wire

Fixing to put in a new 200A service. Got to go up with 2" riser to get height since roof is only 12' at that point. Went wire pricing and found 3/0 Cu THHN/THWN-2 for $.60 ft. or 2/0 for $.44 ft. A lot less than they want for 4/0 Al. I'm thinking this price is way below what its worth. Anyone know the going price on copper wire?

Since we are on this subject. I have an out building that the braided cable is fraying and only half is holding it up right now. How do I fix this can I buy just the braided cable? Is it stainless steel, Anodized steel, or Aluminum? The wiring is all copper.

Another thing I would like to upgrade the main feed to 200amps or more and I�m wondering how would an electrician turn of the power from the main pole? Is there a breaker box coming from the street?

Rod, the power company will have to disconnect the power from the pole. I am an electrician and on occasion I have just cut the feeder wires, capped them off and finished the changeover. Then I would splice the wires back with crimp butt splices and insulate them with rubber tape. I would only suggest this to a well trained and qualified electrician. Also, if you are upgrading the service to your house or barn, whatever it was, the feeder wires coming from the pole to the meter base may not be large enough to handle the extra load. Back before the hurricanes hit the Gulf, I priced 2/0 copper at the area Menard"s (Effingham ILL) for 1.16/ft, 3/0 cu for 1.48/ft and 4/0 AL Triplex for 1.69/ft. When I was ready to install, (after the hurricanes), They were out of the copper wire with no idea when it would be available. Said it was all being redirected to the storm areas. I went ahead and used the AL and doped it up real thick.

That's just about what I remember them being at the Menards over in Elkhart, IN before the hurricane. No electrical supplies open Saturday afternoon, so ran over and looked. Wow!!! And that was then. Thankfully they didn't have enough, or I may've bought. Still need 300' to the barn. After hurricane prices? Haven't had a chance to look yet.

Cost of wire. I would go with the copper. I think that is a real good price. Wire has trippled in the last 2 years. I bought 122/g today for 55 dollars per roll. A couple years ago I was paying 18.50 and around 13 for 13-2 g. Now paying 36 dollars per roll for that Sure run the cost of wiring a house up. If it is residential you should be able to get by with the 2/0. Commercial will require the 3/0.

Raymond, In the ampacity tables in the code there is no designation between commercial and residential.The wire is sized based on amperage not type of dwelling.

Dr. Sporster, I think you might want to check art. 310.15 (b) (6) of the Nationl Electricial Code and you will find a single phase dwelling service adjustment. It tells us that 2/0 cu is good for 200A.

Yep, has really gone up in price. I'm taking advantage of the close-out prices here. Tonight I bought 250' 12-2 for $39 and the same in 14-2 for $27. Went ahead and got 60' of the 3/0 copper since it is commercial - roadside farm market building. Actually had them check the price 3 times cause it was hard to believe it was only .60 a foot.

People are stealing the copper pipes out of vacant houses in Syracuse. Copper is high. Your probably using aluminium.

Hey a year or so ago we had pulled the wire in for a new service in a new building and the power company had not set the pad mount transformer yet so we just pulled the parallel 500's out and let them hang in the wind, when we got back on Monday they were all gone, don't know how they got them out of the pipe's had a hard time pulling them in with a chugger but there was some real money in there, had another job years ago they pulled some 600 copper out that was landed in a big bucket in the switch gear, and pulled the buss bars together and caused a little explosion, luck no one was in the electrical room at the time, vaporised most of the buss bars in the gear, but they got that also, they must have hooked them up to a truck to get them out of there..

Nope, not aluminum. Local store is closing and has everything discounted. As I said, 2/0 copper is .44 a foot and 3/0 copper is .60 per foot. I think the 4/0 aluminum was around $1.50 a foot

Yep, you got it. Some real good deals and some not so good ones. Everything has been 10 to 30% off. I suspect it will go up to maybe 40-50% on some things this Sunday.

I would go with the 3/0 copper regardless of the price. You need that size to handle the amperage and never really liked aluminum wire. Gotta go bigger and takes up more space.
