Been trying to come up with a good excuse to purchase one of these machines for quite a while. Then I finaly dream one up but when I do some looking I see that all of them are rated for 20-22 gauge steel. I have worked some sheetmetal but never had a machine to help do it right. Cripes I can bend 22 gauge with my old weak fingers. Seems awfull conservative for the weight of these machines. The job at hand requires some 20Ga, 18Ga for most of it and a dab of 14Ga. None of it very wide, maybe 12" max. I can cut the stuff with my plazma machine but need to brake and roll it. Maybe a stupid question but will one of those machines do it? Sure seams like a lot of iron to be limited to working with tissue paper? Thanks in advance.

Hi Butch,

I personally would look at a box & pan brake. You can get a good 20ga x 4ft for about $600 new from any SM supply company. 36"slip rolls run about $400 but a good shear is expensive, about $1500.
You can find excellant deals on used SM equipment at equipment sellers.

In order to change gauge sizes to make a bend or too shear or roll, then you have to set the machine for that gauge thickness. Failure to do so will cause the metal not to form correctly, over/under broke, not shear or roll the correct radius or bust the machine.

On a SM brake the means adjusting the nose bar to the correct thickness and adjusting the correct hold down pressure. Both adjustments are fairly quick to make.

On a stomp shear you can get about 4 gauge thickness before having to reset the shear blade gap. I would bet this would be very difficult to keep in adjustment on the cheapy equipment. This is a time consuming adjustment that is not easyly done and why SM shears have limited thickness capibilitys.

Slip rolls are very easy adjusted and need adjustment every time you use them and while you use them.

If any of this equipment gets too far out of adjustment and the user doesn't take the time to adjust, you can pretty well count on something breaking.

We bought one of those tools from Harbor Freight for a specific job, really thin aluminum, that couldn't be done in the big press. It worked fine but when someone tried to work it just a little bit harder, the draw arms, which are cast iron, both broke. We have since made our own from steel plate but still limit the use. The cast iron was too poor quality to repair by welding.
Opinion: ok for hobby use but not much else.

Hey Butch,
The company I work for bought one of those machines several years ago... ours is a Jet. Unfortunately, they paid quite a bit of money for it & it's the biggest pile of junk I've seen. As Steve mentioned, you'd think that the stated capacities are for material that's the full width of the machine... not so. I thought I'd be able to work some slightly thicker steel... 14 ga less than full width... maybe a small strip of 10 ga... tried it and wound up breaking one of the castings. The dies for the brake are made from extremely soft steel (if they are steel) and dent or deform easily... same with the blades for the shear. Finally, I thought surely the roll would work... not so... the bar stock is so soft, if you apply any real pressure to the rolls, they bend. We originally bought the machine to work aluminum (with hopes to work a bit of steel) finally repaired/replaced all the damaged parts and have resigned ourselves to the fact that it will ONLY be used for aluminum in our shop. Take the money you would have spent for this machine and pay a fab shop to bend/roll the parts you need... you'll be money ahead! HTH
Regards, DL

Butch,
All brakes, rolls, & shears are rated at the maximum width sheet that they can handle. So your 20/22 gage machine can handle 20/22 gage at the full width. It can handle thicker gages if the material is less than the full width. You would probably be ok bending stuff that is not very wide. (provided you follow the standard bend rule that no corner radius should be less than the thickness of the material) The larger the radius the less force it takes. A radius of 1 1/2 to 2 times the thickness of the material is preferred.
The manufacturer should be able to tell you the lbs of force required to bend certain sizes of material. All machines have a lbs max limit.
Good luck,
Steve

Thanks Steve thats about what I figured. Forgot to ask if galvanize affects the rating? The macine is one of the China built deals and good info is hard to get from the supplier, in this case Clarke
