Impact Wrench Air Consunption

Does an air powered impact wrench use as much volume qhen is delivering more torque? also does it use as much wolume when the pressure drops? In other words if the compressor is not keeping up pressure should we wait for it to build up?

About 20 years ago I tore down an old J.D. four row cultivator with a C.P. 724 1/2" Air wrench and an old 1/2 horse Wards compressor and I only had to wait for the compressor a couple of times. I just planned my time - remove two or three nuts and then carry the part away while the compressor catches up. Jim

Let me add a little here. At work sometimes we have something so tight that my impact won't break it loose. Its a very powerful 1/2 drive IR unit. We use mostly 1/4 air hoses but also have some 3/8 hoses laying around (its an airline maintenance hangar, very large facility) When it cannot do the job using a 1/4 hose, the first thing I do is look for a 3/8 hose. Even though the couplings and QD nipples are the same size inside, the larger hose allows a better flow of air over the very long runs we usually have to use.

When the 3/8 hose doesn't work, or I cannot find one. I reach in my toolbox and grab my air hose doubler. Its one standard coupling that plugs on the impact with what is esentially a T fitting with coupling nipples on it. I plug two air hoses to the T and plug it to the impact. Sure, I'm still jamming all of that air thru that tiny hole in the QD nipple on the impact, but guess what, it usually does the trick.

On 3/4 drive impacts the tool room has, this air hose doubler is almost a necessity. (our 1" drive impacts us a huge QD coupling and a 3/4 air hose, we have lots of those laying around also. That will get nearly anything loose!!!!! )

While I like 1/4 hoses, they are small and easy to handle, they don't always work, and when they don't, you need a bigger hose even more so than a bigger QD coupling.

Charles is correct. 90 psi is std. The 90 psi has to be at the gun, not at the compressor. It needs to be a line with no connectors or nipples or any other restrictions. We run 120 at work to get 90 at the guns(& that's with non-restricted lines).

Just one other thing to add to what Charles has said. If you on a bolt that is real tight and it takes a lot of hammering to get it loose it might also take so much air that you end up waiting. I have a big compressor but at times I have to stop and wiat on the air to build back up.

Absolutely. The tool is designed to operate properly at 90 psi (that is virtually an industry standard) and some mininum amount of air flow. Even with a small tank, if you have the pressure, you will have the flow for some period of time, unless your gauge/regulator/water seperator/hose is excessively restrictively. However, if the psi drops off, you don't have the hitting power.

Impacts don't use that much CFM of air. If you are using so much as to have and stop and wait for it to pump up, you are darn fast with the impact, or the compressor is nothing more than a pancake unit.
