I built one using a pop can as described in a post a few days ago. The can spins freely. I put a glob of peanut butter centered on the can. At first I oriented the can so that the glob of peanut butter is down toward the water, thinking the mouse would try to crawl upside down to get to it and fall into the water. When that didn't catch anything, I rotated the peanut butter to the top, so that it would spin as soon as the mouse stepped on it, no mouse.

I know the mouse is getting to the can, because I smeared just a small amount of peanut butter on the wire supporting the can so he could get a sample. The sample had been eaten!

I know there is at least one mouse in the storage room because he somehow moved one of the sticky pads accross the room, without getting caught.

Any advice is appreciated.

A friend of mine used this trick. Just put Coca Cola in little jar lids. Mice can not pass gas like real grown men do in a bar room inteligence contest. They drink and bloat up, and die. D-con rep. told me that mice will eat the bait and get a fever, many times they will go outside to lick dew from the grass leaves and die. Coca Cola not so much--They die in the walls and stink like all get out. So use only in well vented building.

No need for water or strings or anything like that.
Just use a 5 gallon bucket and put it right next to something the mouse can climb like a bench or bookcase. Put some bait like a cracker or candy in the bottom. Mouse will try to climb down into the bucket and will not be able to get out.Now you will have a live mouse to deal with but you can flush it down the toilet.

Just my .02 worth.

I read this idea about a year ago when mice got into my pop-up camper and ate the krap out of my canvas. One particularly whitty contributor suggested that we put out instant mashed potatos next to a saucer of water. When the mice eat the instant mashed potatos and then drink the water, they will swell up and burst. I haven't done it yet but the boys and I figured it would be a great source of entertainment when the weather keeps us indoors. Might even be better than a bug zapper. Good luck!

I am told that if the bait location is really dry, a 50-50 mixture of flour and Portland cement powder (no sand) works well. The mouse eats it, the cement powder turns into concrete in the bowels, no more mouse.

I have a bit of a different twist, and it works like a charm. Still the 5 gallon bucket, with water but I use a dowel and a gasline antifreeze bottle for my spinner. Notch the bucket to hold the dowel centered put the antifreeze bottle in center of the dowel peanutbutter on your bottle and your in business. Set the bucket up against something so the mouse can get onto it.

I am the one who posted the bucket idea,it has worked for me and still does,but try this it might help as I have done it alos and seems to always get results. Use more than one can so they fill the bucket top pretty well up,you will have very little string or wire for him to get on and keep the bait to the center. I have also used a piece of extra plastic conduit as the spinner and it works also. Basically anything slick will do it

You are trying to be way too creative. All you need is a 5 gallon bucket about 1/2 full of water. Sprinkle some oatmeal or similar into the bucket so that it floats on top of the water (dry dog food or cat food works quite well also). Now all you need is a plank from the floor to the top rim of the bucket. The mouse will smell the food, walk the gang plank, jump in after the food, and cannot get back out.

Sounds like you have it rigged wrong. The mouse should not be crossing on the wire. I did one in a hunting shack and got 15 in one night. drill a hole in each side of bucket about 3 inches down from top to run wire through so mouse wont try to cross on it. Pass wire through center of pop can so it spins freely and place peanut butter on both ends. Now either make a ramp up to top of bucket or set bucket beside something that the mice can climb. The idea is that the mice get to top of bucket and have to jump out or reach out to the can to get the peanut butter. They dont realize the can will move and when they reach out to lean on it they lose their balance and fall in. All night at the hunting cabin we would here the can spin and a small splash. The next morning found 15 mice in about 6" of water. Most of them were still alive swimming for their lives.

What if you put a ring of bait around the can? Twine sounds like an improvement, but if the twine turns at the edge of the bucket it becomes decision time for the mouse. It may return to edge of bucket or continue on to the can upside down but if it cannot grip the bottom of the can well enough to hold on it will not continue on and fall off the can. So maybe you use a double strand of twine that the mouse can crawl upright on and a short length of wire spliced in running through the can, for a bearing. The bugger then crawls to the top of can, it turns and.... voila!

Vinnie..... ..didn't have 5-gal bucketts, use wide galvanized washtubs. Hung the bait under a funnel over the tub, when they tried to go over the upsidedown edge of the funnel, they fall off into the tubb of water and drown. Water don't haffta be very deep, just gotta keep the critters from jumpin' back up and out. Hang yer funnel inside the tall buckett so they can't jump out once they start sliding. Works; Record was 23 mice over 4-day weekend..... ...Dell, the miners cabin cleaner upper

I have no experience with these traps but I wonder if it would work better to use a piece of stout string such as baler twine to attach the can to the bucket instead of a piece of wire. The mouse would have no trouble crawling across the string to get to the can, but probably would have a harder time getting to the can by walking on the wire.
