OT, need best transportation option

Well, my folks have finally come back home from Mississippi to the Georgia/SC border area. Now we are faced with getting their belongings moved and I want to make sure we understand all options. Dad has a 1 ton truck and an 8.5X24,7K trailer and he believes the best way to move is one trailer load at a time. You must understand that they have about three or four 10x30 warehouses and one classic car to be moved. I estimate at least 10 trips using his method. I suggested filling two of the largest Hertz rental trucks at a cost of $1,200-$1,500 each plus fuel. This should knock out the biggest part of the goods if packed densely. But, I still believe there must be a better way. We cannot afford to pay a moving company to move. How about a private hauler with a semi rig? I am not really sure how to go about finding information on this. Any suggestions?
Most of the load will be heavy antique furniture and heavy boxed goods. That may make it difficult to determine load weight if we found a commercial hauler??? Not so critical if we take Dad's route.

Any suggestions or ideas are appreciated.

I HAVE A GREAT IDEA!!! this is what I did. penskee was the cheepest. I had to move from CT to GA. $1800 for the truck. What I did was get a 1 way rental from them from one penskee location and return at another about an hour away. $250! with unlimited miles. The only downside was they give you less days, but $50 for first day late and $100 a day thereafter. Even with the fuel of driving both ways with the truck and $150 in late fees I saved about $1000. I also purchased a large trailer and resold it after the move. Even if you loose a few hunderd$$$ on resale of trailer your ahead. Penskee trucks have trailer hitches, just dont tell them your planing to tow. Hope this helps!

What about those POD things That Home depot rents out. Its like a shiping container but I am not sure of what sizes they have.

David, The furniture and boxed goods would be out of the weather if they are shipped in some enclosed van truck. Wrapping things in plastic is not fun as I can state from experience. Also plastic has a tendency to come loose in the wind.
Shrink wrapped car that Kelly mentioned is a neat idea, BTW.

I've seen/used Enterprise used alot, there trucks are very nice and well maintaied, As for the car, well, I saw a clasic the other night on a trailer that someone had shrink wraped, thought it was a pretty intereising idea. I was going to ask the driver about but trying to talk to some one in the other lane at 70 mph doesn't work all that well.

I"ve moved a number of times for my job. The company pays for the movers, but we"ve still had a couple bad experiences. I"m not impressed with the moving industry at all.

My daughter & son-in-law just moved from California to Colorado using a "self service" mover. Best deal I"ve ever seen if you don"t have someone else paying for the move. You pay for a fixed volume within a moving van (regular tractor-trailer style), they drop the truck off & you have so many hours/days to load it, they drive to your desination, you unload. You also have to do all you own packing, hopefully before the truck arrives.

Overall it was actually cheaper than renting an equivalent capacity U-Haul. Driver was willing to offer some help/advice loading, to make sure they were able to stay within the estimated volume (earned a nice tip). Looked to me like the ideal way to go if you have to pay for the move yourself. Cheaper and a LOT easier than dealing with a U-Haul.

I"d stay away from the companies that drop off shipping containers for you to load. One of the guys here at work had a real horror story, ended up paying a bunch of extra money because they underestimated how many they needed, the ended up with the company holding some of the containers hostage for "storage" charges.

Household moving used to be regulated by the ICC. The ICC was dissovled in 1995, and these particular responsibilities were transferred to the FMCSA. Household goods movers must register and pay fees to the FMCSA. In return, the FMCSA does essentially nothing. The industry is rife with fraud, such as low-ball quotes, followed by the moving company holding goods hostage until the owner pays 3x the original quote. The big national moving companies generally work out fine, but are expensive.

Other freight carriers have exploited loopholes to get into the "household goods" moving business. Apparently, they are not considered "moving companies" provided that they do not offer pack/load/unload services. They are thus outside the purview of the FMCSA and attendant fees and regulations.

Hence the birth of "ABF upack" (see www.upack.com) and similar services offered by Consolidated Freightways and others. As another poster mentioned, they drop a trailer at your house, you load it, and they drive it to the destination. It is supposed to be competitive with renting a Uhaul truck, and you don't have to drive.

Personally, I would much rather deal with a long time national outfit like ABF than "Joe's lowball moving company", especially if most of the stuff was already boxed and ready to go.

Were they hurricane victims??? Have an AUCTION in Mississippi and then you don't have to move or rent anything. Dad and Mom don't use all of that stuff anyway. I know I have cleaned out a lot of my things before my kids have to have a sale. Have cancer at 64 years old. That much less for them to sell. Go tomorrow for presurgery check-up. Just a thought, but have you rented a dumpster to throw out the useless stuff, the older folks have lots of accumulated stuff that is worthless. 2 years ago my mom helped my grandparents throw out loads of stuff, my grandparents are in their 80's. My mom spent many days over there throwing out bags and bags of useless stuff. My thoughts are: why pay to ship useless stuff when it is going to be chucked later on anyway. I would rent a Hertz truck, dont go the trailer load at a time, time is money, gas is money. I have moved 4 times in my life and it aint fun.

Call ABF they have pups trailers that they drop at your home you load and seal and they deliver it to your door , these are 28' x 102 wide trailers. but you could pack a lot into 2 of these pup trailers if you chose to do so .

David I've never been through this, so my opinion is worth exactly what you are paying for it.

I think a semi and van would be the perfect way to go, however, I doubt it will be cheap.

I think that if you find someone to do this, it is going to have to be a family friend that has a rig and time on his hand. It's going to be hard to find a private hauler that will sit for a whole day while you load, then drive for a day, then sit for another day while you unload. I don't know freight rates, but I would expect to pay 3 times the going rate for sitting around.
