OT: Hydraulic information

This is sort of a tool question...or rather a conversion of a tool.

I want to add a hydraulic cylinder to my rifle reloading press.

I know nothing about hydraulics...zip.

I know that I need a 2 way cylinder and a pump that can be driven with a 115 vac motor, the flow must be controllable and cycle time must be fairly quick....similar to what a regular hand operated press works at. The piston diameter really shouldn't be over .75" and needs to travel about 8" maximum..it must be able to push and pull with equal force and capable of generating considerable force.

Can any of you steer me in the right direction? I need to know what to buy....type of pump/cylinder/control valves..reservoir.

I think air would be much easer and better. The compresser can be located away from the work aera as well as pipeing the exhaust away. Air is easy to control the pressure and speed, no sparks, and much cheaper to build and run.

I think you are going to spend a lot of money and time just to find out that hyd. will not do what you want. One leak and you will have a big mess on your hands.
Have you given consideration to running your press with mechanics. Set up a jack shaft with a cam attached to the handle. Drive the jack shaft with an explosion proof electric motor. Install a couple of micro switchs to control the cycle. Use a speed control to adjust the rpms' of the motor.You could even install a clutch on it to control pressure.
Then build a good guard to keep body parts that you want to keep out of the works.

You mention explosion proof motor but all electrical components have the same dangers as a motor.

You are correct to a certian point. However it is much easier to seal the other electrical componets than it is a motor. Also most quality micro switchs are sealed pretty well. Why take the chance? Better safe than sorry.
For what he is wanting to do he would only need the motor and two switchs. One switch to start the cycle and one to stop the cycle, the start switch would over ride the stop switch. This would be a very simple machine to set up. Much easier and cheaper than air or hydraulics. You would have the same problem with air as with hyd. one blown hose and you have a big mess on your hands.

Gents,

Let me say a bit more; in the first place, I have been reloading for close to 30 years and have a room full of equipment...from single stage through several progressives.

AS for pneumatics/air, the problems I see with that is the fact that making and using air is noisy....the compressor running and the constant air exhaust from the cylinder.

I was hoping some of the hydraulic mechanics might tell me what kind of pump/cylinder/control valves I would need. I would like to use easy to obtain items and as cheaply as possible.....buying a $1,000+ set up is out of the question. Thanks all the same.

Compressed air is the way to go instead of hydraulics. You will have to know how much pressure you need to put on the cases to figure out how big a cylinder and how much air pressure you will need. You will not need much of a compressor to do what you want.

First let me say that there are reloading benches for ammo. A manual arbor press from what I have seen, I have never used one. I dont know how dangerous a hydraulic cylinder would be for reloading, but you should be able to find a 1HP hydraulic power supply in a Granger catalog for under $1,000. These units are about 1500psi and 1 GPM, 115VAC. Good Luck.

Thats just one of many reasons that hyds and gun powder don't mix well. Just think what would happen if you have a leak of oil and then you get gun powder in with that oil you have the makeings of a bomb that can not be cleaned up well and will seap in to just about any place and is just going to sit there waiting to go explode/burn
