I tried this in the OT forum, and I thought I'd try here too since this is where I've been seeing OT posts for years. Thanks up front.

I read somewhere (maybe here?) that moth balls are effective in keeping skunks from under decks or porches or other structures sitting on pier blocks etc. I'm wondering if moth balls would work inside my shop to keep out rats & other critters? Anyone see any concerns (or value) with this?

Moth balls used to be made of camphor, then they became paradichlorobenzine or napthalene. That happened so long ago that I have no memory of camphor moth balls (for reference, I do have a memory of listening to The Lone Ranger on the radio) but maybe some of the folk remedy type uses of moth balls precede the change. Low tech information stays around a long time.

I have closed sheds, a garage and a tractor trailer trailer for storage. The most effective thing I've found for pest control is anti-freeze. It has a smell that carries quite a ways ( BUT!!! BE CAREFUL!!!! IF YOU LEAVE IT WHERE PETS CAN GET IT YOU GET THE SAME RESULT-NO PET!!!! ) I leave little bowls in the sheds & trailer where there are no openings I can find but mice magically do... & in the garage under the work bench where the family pets can't reach it. With the given pests can smell it & it will DRAW them, I keep a bowl I have to refill regularly under a pallet a distance from the house. LOTSA mouse droppings in the area under the pallet.... Being mindfull of nature, anything larger than a field mouse would have trouble getting to it... I did have squirrels in my attic once. Some mousebait/D-Con in peanut butter worked on them... I'd bet that would solve your larger varment problem too... I had so many moth balls in my sheds the driveway stunk but I still had mouse trouble in the sheds trying to rely just on mothballs...

Don"t know about skunks but a really dumb fox had three babies in a shed about 150 feet from my house last summer. The mother wasn"t a very good provider and the little guys were real skinny and sick looking so I got the bright idea to start feeding them. One of them would come within about five feet for a hand out. This was pretty good entertainment for a week or two and then they"d sit out in the yard and bark and yip all night. I got tired of that in a hurry and I dumped two boxes of moth balls down the hole. They were gone for two days and then came back for a few days. They hung around for a couple more weeks and then two of the pups got killed on the highway and the other two just disappeared. Maybe you"ll have better luck with your skunk. Jim

Roger I found moth balls to be effective for skunks but not too great on mice or rats.
