Has any one here used a grease fitting cleaner? It's a metal tube with a plunger on one end and greaser fitting on the other. Light oil is loaded into the barrel, put it on the zirck and tap the plunger with a hammer to force oil into the fitting and clean it out.

If it is the zerk fitting that is stopped up just take it out and THEN hook the grease gun to it...that"s several thousand pounds of effort in the grease gun. The rest of the posts are right...use it on straight fittings only or you"ll break them while hammering. A bit of heat will help on stubborn jobs. Fred OH

I have two of them, one 70 years old. They do not wear out. All that I have ever used in them is grease. The idea of using penetrating or something lighter sounds good. If I did not already have one I wouldnt go out of my way for one. The other methods posted here may be the better way to do the job.

The other posts have a point, these things work sometimes but more often than not they don't. If it's just the fitting stopped up then the best thing to do is change it, otherwise you'll have $10 worth of time spend trying to clean out a 10 cent part. If the hole itself is stopped up, and it usually is, clean it out and then install a short pipe nipple in it. Fill the nipple with penetrating oil, then screw the hose on your grease gun directly into the fitting. Now you can force the penetrating ol through the grease hole using the high pressure the gun provides. There's less chance of breaking anything, etc doing it this way....and it usually works. If it doesn't then leave the penetrating oil to set overnight with pressure from the gun on it and try it again the next day. I've been doing this for years working on equipment and I'd say it works at least 80-90% of the time. Good luck.

Fire up your small propane torch, heat the zerk until grease starts to bubble up through the end, put your grease on and start pumping. 99% success.

They work now and then on a straight fitting. On a 90 degree fitting they break the fitting off most every time, on a 45 you take your chances. Take out old fitting dig out the worst of the hard stuf underneath and dribble some fuel ol, kero or spray your favorite magic oil into the cavity. Install new fitting of dig out old one. Grease gun will force fluid into hardned dirt /grease and loosen.

Like a lot of things, sometimes they work 100%. and sometimes not at all, and you still have to remove the ZERK and dig out all the hardened grease and dirt beneath it.

Thanks. The ones I saw were about forty dollars. Sounds like they aren't worth it.
