Hi All- I need some assistance on a generator hook-up for my house. I had a Reliance Power Transfer Kit Model 31406CRK installed by a licensed Electrician. It was tested and inspected by town so we are good there. This was done 2 years ago when the new house was built. Fortunately have not had to use itbut because of that Im not certain I remember how to operate it so Im looking to make sure I understand the directions correctly. It says that With your Reliance Controls transfer switch installed, it is not necessary to turn off any of your load center breakers when starting you generator, even when the utility power is fully functional. This is because the double throw break-before-make action of the transfer switch prevents feeding generator power to the utility and, conversely prevents feeding utility power back to your generator.

So when utility power is OUT, I dont have to touch the MAIN breaker box correct?

The Instrutions say once generator is running I merely turn the toggle switches on the Reliance transfer switch from the LINE position to the GEN position one at a time.

Not to argue, but if my understanding is correct that I DONT have to touch the main breaker - would I be better off throwing the main breaker to the OFF position when the utility power is OUT regardless? IF so why??? Additional protection from sending juice out to the main lines etc?? (Gotta protect the linemen ya know) thanks in advance

It's isolated so don't throw the main breaker. The transfer switch system was made this way on purpose incase somebody forgets. With the main closed you will see the lights etc come on when utilty power returns.

I see no reason to shut the main off if the switch has been installed and checked out by a licensed electrician. If you just wanted to be oversure, it would not hurt to turn the main off.
