I'm currently rebuilding a Massey Pony. The generator was missing so was planning on converting to 12V with an alternator. I was thinking about adding utility to the tractor by building in an onboard DC welder using the same alternator. Something like the one in Mother Earth News ( http://www.motherearthnews.com/library/1980_November_December/Build_a__20_Portable_DC_Arc_Welder ). Does anybody have any ideas or experience on this?

3/32 rod is probably would work. I would not think it would have enough out put to do more than 1/4 inch plate. Too small for much farm use. I have an old sears 220 arc welder that when I need to do some remote work, I hook it up to my 5000 watt (30 amp) generator. I can use 1/8 rod at the 115 amp setting. This it good enough for pipe fences and such.

Re: The Zena welder http://www.zena.net/ looks interesting. I would like to here if anyone here has used one.

Hi, Clay

There's a company called Zena, Inc. that sells a 150 amp DC 100% duty cycle welder that you install like an alternator in your truck, tractor, riding mower, etc. I've come close to buying one a couple of times, but I'm afraid that since my wife wouldn't care about it, there'd be nobody to shame me into doing the installation, and I'd keep putting it off until the warranty ran out.

You might take a look at that. I'd like to get someone else's opinion, in any case.

All the best, Stan

From what I have heard about them they where very limited and the alternators burned out real fast.
