That's a rough call with the limited info you posted. If the tin is installed in sheets like 2' x 2' or 3' x 3' and you can remove it without damaging it, it will be much easier to work with. It also depends upon how much rust is on it. If it is pitted or rotted through in spots, you're looking at getting into a serious time consuming project. If the rust is light, not big clumps but rather a coating where the base metal is not damaged beyond a slight roughness, you may be able to clean it up in place without too much trouble. Some questions for you before I go any further: 1- How bad is the rust? Heavy scale or light surface corrosion? 2- How much design is stamped into the tin? 3- Is it a deep stamped fruit or vine type design or is it more of a basic geometric pattern? 4- How deep is the lowest point of the stamping? 5- How many layers of paint are on it? 6- How many square feet of ceiling are we talking about? Once I have this info, I'll be glad to give you my opinions and suggestions. I know these tin ceiling and wall panels can be made beautiful if you invest the time and effort. I saw one that was a fruit and vine pattern where the owner hand painted each fruit, stem and leaf to natural colors. Looked great.
