do the rust neutralizers work?

I just came in posession of a trailer, small disc and brush hog that have all been sitting out in a field for several years accumulating rust (actually I just in posession of the field with these implements in it). I have never restored farm equipment before and want to repair them and paint them and put them back into service.

I don't own a sandblaster and my only compressor is for my nail guns (probably too small). I was wondering if the "rust neutralizers" work in stopping the rust and making a suitable surface on which to paint like they advertise on the can?

Any advice short of buying a blaster and bigger compressor?

Thanks, JC

JC,

I have been restoring cars for a long time and have found two products that work better than any others that I have tried over the years. One product is a rust neutralizer call Rassonil. The other product is call Zero Rust. Zero Rust is a paint that does what all the other paints claim to do and that is to cover any rust that has a minimum amount of preparation (like your implements) and either topcoat them with something else or just leave the Zero Rust as the only topcoat. I don't work for either of these outfits, but I am very satisfied with their products. Hopefully I was successful in including the link below. It will explain more about each product.

Try Ospho. It's available at marine hardware stores and many paint shops. It's a paint prep, there are similar products. It's also good for removing rust stains from fiberglass.

If the parts are small enough you can immerse them in a nonconductive tank, you can use water& washing soda to electrolyticly remove the rust. If you don't wwant to disassemble, 8% Tannic acid, 2& oxcalic acid and water make an excellent rust remover You can add ethelene glycol and alcohol if you have to use it in cold temperature, paint it on and let it work. You can also convert the rust to Iron Phosphate, and paint right over it, for that, you use 2% Phosphoric acid in water. No need to prime if you convert.

Hi JC, Vinegar desolves rust leaves behind a iron oxide that can be washed away. Then use oil to protect the metal until ready to paint then use acetone to remove the oil.
