Hello Fellows I have a 1977 dodge military truck that has been sitting for seven or eight years. I removed the gas tank to clean it out. The tank was about half full of rotten gas and a sticky varnish crud that I need to clean out. I got every thing out of the tank except for the sticky stuff. The tank is plastic and I need to know what will dissolve this crud. Would laquer thinner or something like that work? Thanks Danny Hearl

Buy a bucket of carb. dip cleaner from NAPA or the likes and pour it into the tank. It shouldn't take too long to clean it out 1/2 hour ? or less should not hurt the plastic in a short time if at all.

Thanks for all the replies. I will get some carb dip cleaner and try that. Or get some acetone. Don,t know about rolling rocks around in a plastic tank. My luck it would build up static and go boom!!!!! !!!!!

Does it have internal baffles? If not, use some rocks with whatever chemical you decide on and shake it up real well. The rocks will help knock off the crud. If it has baffles, then you'll have to use the chemical alone.

Acetone should work fine in a tank. This plastic is a little different type. I use acetone all the time at work and use it out of a plastic spry bottle. Same bottle for over 9 years. Every couple of years I have to replace the spray nossel though.

Careful with Acetone or MEK...it eats plastic.

Iffin ya got the time brake fluid will Dissolve it, may take a week. I have tried every thing even the best carburetor cleaner and brake fluid werks on gummed up fuel even when its turned to tar. Best of all water breaks down brake fluid so then you kin flush it clean. laquer thinner will not touch it. Git a sample out of the tank and try it then you will know what werks, iffin its like what I think it izz its like tar or thick bear'in grease.
