Need help! Cub lowboy 154 hydraulic fluid info

Baught an early '70's lowboy last year. Noticed that the hydraulic fluid was leaking from under the tractor.

How do I check the fluid and add the fluid? What is the recommended fluid to use?

There are Cub and Cub Lowboy models and there are the 154 and 185 models that are a little different. The Cub and Cub Lowboy have a seperate hydraulic resavoir for hyrdaulic oil. The 154 and 185 pumps the oil from the rearend for the hydraulics and uses the same oil that is in the rearend and final drive. Hope this clears it up for you.

The Cub Lowboy uses Hy-tran for the transmission, final drive and hydrolics.

Is the use of Hy tran fluid in all gear boxes something new, the older cub we have uses 90 weight gear oil in all but the hydraulic system?

There is a plug on the back end of the tractor. I can't remember for sure but I think you have to remove the back cover. There should be a plug toward the top and in the middle. It will either have a recessed square or a hex. Fill it till oil runs out of the hole. Hopes this helps.

Ken has it. Check the boot on the shifter. Mine leaked pretty good there. Taking the fenders and the rear cover off isn't too bad of a job.

I kinda miss my 185. It sat high enough not to get the blowout all over me when I mowed, unlike my dixie chopper.

Hope you can still help me out. Took a look at it yesterday. Looking att he tractor from the rear there are two plugs, one one each side, both about the level of the rear axel.

Are these the proper ones? I removed the left one and fluid came out, removed the right one and nothing came out. Does this mean anything to you guys?

You have to take the rear cover off. If you have the the mower on you have to take the pto pulley off. Then there are a few bolts to remove. Not hard to do.

After you remove the rear cover you will find another plug like the other two you found. I believe it may fill the lower end also. If not fill all of them till it runs out of the fill hole.
