I have a large garage with a grease pit to work on my cars. I just got done putting a clutch in my Escort. It seems like I am always going up and down the ladder to get a tool I can't reach from below. This time I cleaned off the workbench in front of the car before I started, but still ended up with most of the tools on the floot. Any suggestions on organizing a job so I don't wear out the legs and knees on the ladder. Thanks for the suggestions in advance.

Pits are dangerous, even in your own private shop. They can collect gas fumes or (if heating with LP) propane fumes. Also exhaust fumes. Dangerous and deadly. You should have lots of air flowing (forced with a blower) into the pit.

The best suggestion, fill in the pit and put in a lift. I know its not practical $$$ wise and possibly you don't have the overhead to do that without building mods, but that is the best thing.
