OT-6.5 Diesel Crank Seal

Can anyone tell me how indepth it is to put a new crank seal in a 98 K2500 4X4? I have a lot of oil up front from either the crank or the pan. Figure I would do both while I am down there...

Front seal is a piece of cake. Rear seal is a one-piece seal, so replacement will require removal of the engine OR transmission.

Its the front seal. Does the balancer pull right off like on the old 350 gas engines? Also, can you get the pan down and clear of the front axle assembly? Any tricks or tips? Also, while I am on the subject of 6.5 diesels. How often do you guys adjust the valves? I dont know much about diesels, but my buddy swears I need to adjust them....A preventive sort of measure...any truth to that?

Yes, the balancer pulls off like a 350 gas.

To put it back on, you will need a balancer installer tool with a metric thread to screw into the crank snout. IIRC, it's a 14MM.

I can't say for sure if the pan will come down without undoing the motor mounts, and lifting the engine up a bit, or dropping the front diffy a bit.

I believe the 6.5's have self ajusting valves, you don't have to ajust them.

The 6.2's are self ajusting and i think the 6.5's are the same way.

Front or rear seal?
Front isn't too bad. Use a good proper puller and it's a fairly easy job. Rear main is a little more involved.
