Yesterday I hauled my SC and DC out to my brother's place for the winter, about a 19 mile trip. First the SC and then the DC. I have a 12,000# rated tandem trailer. Both times I think I should have had more tongue weight. How does one determine proper tongue weight? Thanks, Glenn F.

A guy that hauled for many many miles told me always load till the overloads ALMOST touch the pads. If your truck does not have overloads, I guess T_Bone method is a good.

If you really want to figure it out I think you put 10% of your weight on the hitch.

Hi Glenn,

I hitch the unloaded trailer then measure the bumper hieght then place the load weight forward until the bumper sags 2" down from the unloaded measurement.

I've never tried my method on a WD hitching so I can't tell you there but have used it on tag, GN and 5th wheels without any problems.

I've used this method for 40yrs on many different trailer and tow vehicle combinations and it has yet to be wrong.

I like to hang a string with a weight a couple of inches off the ground. Can attach it to the bumper with a magnet or whatever. Saves getting out of the seat. Jack
