I have aluminum wire coming into the house. All circuits are copper. How do I know if my panel connections at the main are rated for aluminum? Is there a way to tell if a problem is coming?

All service entrance cable is aluminum.Heat is resistance, if your lugs are not hot there is a good connection.Hire a guy with an infared camera or shut off the power[pull the meter] and feel it.If you have Penetrox on the connections then you should have nothing to worry about. The lugs are rated CU/AL in most panels.I think you read the other guys post and started to worry.

I said service entrance cable, not service conductors.Have you ever seen copper service entrance cable where the nuetral is wrapped around the other conductors? I have never seen it but that does not mean it isnt made. All Ive ever seen is al.I will say I have never seen an electrical engineer that specifies aluminum. They like copper.

There is a service entrance cable (SE) that is copper with the netural wraped around the out side, the wire is usually tinned. Never knew why it is tinned.

So there is copper. Not popular in my area.It must be tinned so it does not turn green by the service head, maybe.

If you buy service entrance cable it is all Aluminum and has been for a long time so most boxes and large breakers are OK with it.

Neighbor is electrician and he helped me with my garage connections. He said the bad connection develops over long time due to difference between Aluminum and other metals in the box. They have a paste to use to prevent. I would still recheck after a few months or even a year. Seems like I have all my breaker panels open that often anyway.

I had to use wire lugs to tie my Aluminum to copper wire at a junction box. I have not used paste but I am going to upgrade to a larger cable and service box in a few months.
