When I was a kid, my father had a hand tire pump that was heavy duty and was almost all steel, including the cylinder and handle. The hose didn't have one of those flip-lever devices but instead had a screw-on fitting that you would simply screw onto the valve stem. The pump was a workhorse and did great for many years until the rubber piece around the piston finally disintegrated.

Now all the hand pumps I see are cheap plastic and Chinese-built, and they have those weak hoses with the flip levers that lock onto the valve stems. I bought one at Harbor Freight and the whimpy hose split open the second time I used it, and I was only putting 10 pounds of air into a riding mower tire! I've been searching around for a decent quality, metal tire pump and haven't found anything much better than the Harbor Freight one. Is there a well-built tire pump to be found anywhere?

I needed a new hose for an old pump and was unable to find anything decent at auto supply, etc. I was at Loews and found 3/16 fuel line rated at 50 psi. I bought 3' and used screw clamps with the original air chuck and at the pump outlet, and it works fine. Don't forget there's a ball bearing in the bottom of the pump outlet.

I have used one of the Campbell Hausfield pumps. It works fair. I live in Williamson, Ga.

Just a little way east of me. I pass thru Williamson coming and going to Griffin, to the New Holland Dealer. We now have a NH dealer in Newnan, but the folks at Wade NH are so sharp on parts I prefer to use them. Besides, lots of neat stuff to look at each visit.

Here's one that still has the leather cup inside. Good quality for less than $60

Gemplers at Gemplers.com has a heavy duty hand pump for around $50 but I can't tell what type of fitting it has.

Have you thought of looking at flea markets and garage sales? You might be able to pick up an old one and replace rubber parts, and be in business. By the way, tha one we had had a leather cup for the seal on the piston. You could replace it with a piece of leather from an old shoe or something like that. Might have to oil the leather liberally, until it takes shape.

This is a foot pump, not a hand pump, but made of metal and pretty neat sounding, from J C Whitney of all places.
