Head Bolts- Grade 8?

I'm doing some engine work on a '36 Massey Harris. One of the head bolts broke while unbolting the head. I got the broken piece out of the block without too much trouble. I will probably replace all of the head bolts since some are rusted badly above the threads. Would the original head bolts have been grade 5 or stronger? Should I replace them with grade 8?

If you can find them buy true head bolts. They aren't grade 5 or 8 but made in a way that they striche (SP).

I think they are grade 8. Head bolts, main bearing bolts, rod bolts or studs are all top quality stuff. All bolts strech a bit. At GM here we never reuse a headbolt, if the head comes off, all new fasteners must be used. I could be wrong - I will check into this - I see the darn things all the time! We have test equipment that measures the stretch in bolts, and clamp loads are monitored. Usually the bolts are tightnened to an initial torque and then some number of degrees past that. Its been a few years since I worked in that area. A human hand never touches the bolts unless there is a problem. The bolts are pushed in by air thru a tube, and then tightnened by the next station. BTW - we do little or no repair on engines in the plant. If it isn't right, it gets scrapped.

Amen, once a fastener has been torqued. All bets are off should somebody try to re-use it. If one head bolt broke, it's certain the others are fatigued as well.
